The timing is no coincidence. The day after #MLKDay House Education Committee Chair
@michudall will hear her bill to muzzle teachers by banning factual discussion of controversial subjects like racial injustice and discrimination. #CRT #HB2112 🧵
None of the concepts Rep. Udall's bill seeks to ban are taught in Arizona schools. That's irrelevant. The bill would open the door for any political activist sowing anti-"Critical Race Theory" hysteria to wreak havoc in Arizona schools, costing $ and ruining careers.
For example, if discussions of the Holocaust, or why we celebrate MLK Day, or why Arizona took longer than other states to approve the holiday, or the Navajo Trail of Tears bring discomfort to an activist, the school can be sued and the teacher fired.
No educator is interested in telling families how to parent their children. But we can't be so fragile that teachers and school administrators are targeted, punished, fined and fired for even discussing the experience of the many cultures that have made our country exceptional.
It's unfortunate that instead of calming dangerous right-wing attacks on teachers and schools Gov.
@dougducey
threw gasoline on the fire by ramping up this racially tinged culture war campaign issue during his State of the State speech. The consequences are real.
There is no need to imagine the chaos and censorship that will result from bills like this. It's happening already in states that have already launched their attacks on schools and teachers. Examples:

House Republicans were furious when they couldn't move the extremist budget they dropped out of the sky Tuesday because they didn't want you to know what's in it. Here's what their plan and 13 new amendments – including 200 pages of attacks on K-12 education -- will do: #AZBudget
The GOP budget squanders a 1-time $2 billion surplus built largely on federal COVID relief to give Arizona's wealthiest residents a permanent, unsustainable tax cut. This welfare for the wealthy is designed to thwart voters who passed Invest in Ed to fund our schools. #AZbudget
As wildfires raged across our state we came together with $100m to immediately address the crisis. Future legislatures' hands will be tied, especially if the economy slows, with $1.7b off the top going back to the rich & shared revenues w/cities rising from 15% to 18%. #AZBudget
