Hi π
I saw job descriptions asking for lots of experience from candidates and thousand of skills.
I'll never be able to get a job in IT! What should I do?
here's my honest answer π
1/4 It is a constant battle to decide what should be a requirement and what shouldn't:
a) If I put HTML & JavaScript as my only requirements I'll get too many portfolios.
b) If I put React, dayjs, stripe, axios, graphql, formik, yup I might miss out on great candidates!
2/4 Let's say you encounter b) and you have strong fundamentals in React & Front End development. Apply ASAP!
I'm sure you can learn the API of Formik or dayjs!
Make sure you have a portfolio showcasing your best work using the fundamentals of React & FE and apply.
3/4 I'm willing to make trades and other companies too.
I'd rather hire someone who needs a week or two to catch up on some tech than hire someone who checked all the boxes but I feel I can't work with them.
You'll be working with people first, then with tech.
4/4 Keep your portfolio up-to-date!
Keep it as living documentation of your developer journey - it's also a place where you can experiment with top-notch tech.
There are plenty of great portfolios from people on Tech Twitter and I compile the bests into threads occasionally.
Creating an eye-catching developer portfolio is not easy.
Right now I'm compiling my notes and industry experience about developer portfolios into an ebook.
