Police in this tiny Alabama town suck drivers into legal ‘black hole’

“‘Brookside is a poster child for policing for profit,” said Carla Crowder, the director of Alabama Appleseed Center for Law & Justice, a nonprofit devoted to justice and equity.’”

“Police stops soared between 2018 and 2020. Fines and forfeitures – seizures of cars during traffic stops, among other things – doubled from 2018 to 2019. In 2020 they came to $610,000. That’s 49% of the small town’s skyrocketing revenue.”
“…In 2018, when the town had one full-time police officer and a few part-timers, it reported no serious crimes to the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center…”oregonlive.com/nation/2022/01…
“…Brookside Police did patrol the 1.5-mile stretch of Interstate 22 within their jurisdiction and wrote tickets that brought in $82,467 in fines. That contributed a 14% chunk of the city’s total income…”oregonlive.com/nation/2022/01…

“My whole life just flashed before my eyes” Reporter gets hit by a car on live TV, after which she says it’s her last week on the job.
She says: “I actually by a car in college just like that, too.” 😳
It appears the reporter, @toriyorgeytv, was running her own live shot, being both reporter & videographer, which is dangerous.
Nobody’s watching your back.
Good news: She got a job in Pittsburgh. I hope she doesn’t have to run her own live shots. post-gazette.com/ae/tv-radio/20…

Meet Michigan Judge Alexis G. Krot.
She humiliated, yelled at, & said she wished she could jail an elderly cancer patient who was fined for not cleaning up his property. “You should be ashamed of yourself,” the judge yelled to the man, who could barely breathe as he spoke.
The man’s son tried to explain to the judge that his 72-year-old father has been sick and unable to clean up the property. He asked if she could forgive the $100 fine that she imposed, and she yelled again: “Do you see that photo? That is shameful!” This was the photo. Image
Judge Alexis G. Krot serves the city of Hamtramck, Michigan. She graduated from a Catholic university and serves on a Catholic school board. I wonder what the priests, nuns, and Catholic community she serves with would think about her behavior on the bench.31stdistrictcourt.net/about_the_cour… Image

Feel good story of the day: A Louisiana man got a spam/scam call & told the scammer to call back if he wanted help. The caller did. What happened next led to a friendship/mentorship that’s changed the lives of 3 people, stretching from LA. to Ghana, Africa.
There was a go fund me set up after our story aired. gofundme.com/f/isaacs-educa…
