(thread) Personal news: Starting in Feb., I will be the Chief Election & Campaign Correspondent for CBS News. My reporting will focus on the 2022 midterms, the 2024 election, and American democracy. Stay tuned for in-depth stories, scoops, investigations, and on-the-road reports.
CBS News president @Neerajkhemlani and I have had many conversations about the necessity of reporting the fragile state of American democracy & the need to break important stories across CBS News’ leading broadcast and streaming platforms ahead of 2022 midterms & 2024 election.
To my soon-to-be CBS News colleagues, your excellence on “CBS Evening News,” “CBS Mornings,” “Face the Nation,” “Sunday Morning,” “48 Hours,” “60 Minutes,” and CBS News streaming has set the pace in our field. I have much to learn from you and I'm excited to work with you.
Since Jan. 2014, I have been a reporter at The Washington Post. @Stevenjay recruited me and has been a true friend and guide. I've sat next to @PhilipRucker for years. Another true friend. Same with @DanBalz. Those three, and so many others, have been rocks in my life and career.
While I will now be working full-time at CBS News, it's important to me to keep a bond with The Post. CBS News, me, and The Post plan to collaborate on occasional special projects and investigations. I look forward to those joint efforts.
I also deeply appreciate and respect the entire Washington Post family: Sally Buzbee, Fred Ryan, Cameron Barr, Krissah, Tracy, Kris, Tammy, Matea, Carol, Ashley, Josh, Peter W., Weigel, Tom, Ros, Dan E., Paul K., Kathy, Scott, Marty, and so many others who have been in my corner.
Deep thanks, too, to Elsa & @realBobWoodward, who is the best reporter and mentor. To the wise and trustworthy Bob Barnett. And to Jon Karp and the team at S&S, my friends at @PBS@WashingtonWeek, and @MSNBC (@JoeNBC, Mika, @NicolleDWallace) for their support over the years.

"Next to Freedom Plaza, upstairs in a suite at the famed Willard Hotel," Bannon, Giuliani and other lawyers/allies were "prodding Republicans in Congress by phone to join forces with Trump on January 6 and block Biden's certification."
"As midnight approached... people in the streets were yelling, delighted and almost euphoric about Trump taking back the election."
"Trump soon called Giuliani, and then called Steve Bannon... 'He was very arrogant,'" Trump said of Pence.
"Trump's four words were sobering. It was Trump explaining away a deal gone bad. Pence was not going to break. If Mike Pence was arrogant, that meant Trump's push was dead. 'Very arrogant,' Trump repeated. Trump kept tweeting into the night."
Bob Woodward and I will be on CNN tonight with Anderson Cooper. Tomorrow morning, we'll be on "Morning Joe" and "The View."
To prepare, I'm going through my old notebooks tonight from the "Peril" project, the January 2021 box of notebooks. Here are some notes...
"1/5 city empty, freezing cold, trash uncollected. rats everywhere. Willard a hot spot. MAGA clashing with police there. Rowdy. Back of Willard- black cars? Folo."
Later, we went back and forth on whether to include the detail on rats in book and decided against it. Extraneous.
We later learned that Giuliani, Trump's lawyers/allies, and Bannon crew were arriving in those cars... and it took months to fully understand, but eventually we understood and confirmed the scope of the Willard war rooms and Trump's connection to them.
(thread) Based on our reporting, Eastman begins drafting his memo in late Dec. and Trump WH has it by the new year. WH then gives it to Sen. Lee and others on Jan. 2, as we document in "Peril."
But by Jan. 3, after Pence meets w/ Sen. Parliam., it's clear he's not coming along.
On Jan. 4, Pence is in Georgia for a rally, but once he flies back, Trump calls him to the Oval. See "Peril" pgs. 224-227. "I'm getting guidance that says I can't," Pence tells Trump and Eastman, who is there. "Listen. Listen to John," Trump replies.
As Eastman and Trump pressure Pence and Pence's aides/lawyers, the rest of the Trump WH is in full-steam ahead mode that same day. See "Peril" chapter 41. "Graham was at the WH on January 4, where he received some memos supporting Trump's claims." We put those memos in the book.
(thread) On Nov. 8, 2021, the January 6 committee issued new subpoenas as it continues its investigation.
After spending much of the year working with @realBobWoodward on “Peril,” here are some questions I have as a reporter, based on what we have uncovered so far.
On Nov. 7, 2020, Kushner and campaign officials meet in Arlington then Stepien and Miller, issued subpoenas today, talk to Trump. Biden has just been declared the winner. But Trump refuses to concede in private discussions that afternoon and eve. What did he say? (p. 143-144)
“Meatballs and pigs in a blanket” are served at WH on evening of Nov. 7, 2020. Trump tells Dave Bossie and other campaign aides to keep fighting. He then *pushes them to find votes.*
“How do we find the 10,00 votes that we need in Arizona?” (p. 146)
After Pence leaves Oval on Jan. 5, Trump is furious. Pence isn't breaking. He opens the door near the Resolute Desk. "A rush of cold air blasted the room." He can hear the mob in the streets outside the Willard. He's elated to hear them. (p. 230)
"As staffers filed in, some began to shiver. Still, Trump did not close the door... The noise outside grewe louder, almost like a party.
'Isn't that great?' Trump exclaimed. 'Tomorrow is going to be a big day.'" (p. 231)
"Trump went around the room, asking for advice about congressional Republicans. 'How do we get them to do the right thing?' he asked. No one offered an answer that satisfied him."
Important to remember what prompted the subpoena — scenes in PERIL showing Bannon and Trump speaking about the 6th, thinking it through. Talking about Pence.
“People are going to go, ‘What the fuck is going on here? We’re going to bury Biden on January 6th, fucking bury him.’”
This was not just about a stray comment on a radio/podcast program. This is about Trump. Conversations with a president who is trying to stoke chaos on the Hill and push the election to the House so he can stay in power.
Bannon, Giuliani, the Willard. Pushing Pence on the eve.
Trump is working the levers of power on night of Jan. 5…
Eastman memo reveals the details of Trump’s legal plan. But Bannon and Trump conversations remain key to understanding the rest of the story — Trump’s behind the scene efforts to stir up his supporters, ramp up pressure…
