Let's talk about the atrocity that happened in the Senate last night with 50 Republicans & 2 Dems blocking voting rights.

First of all—17 GOP Senators who voted FOR this bill back in 2006, now voted AGAINST it. GOP is telling us they've stopped caring about democracy.

Thread

This voting rights failure is a stark reminder that the Senate protects land—not people. Look at the math.

USA has ~330M people. The 52 Senators who blocked voting rights rep 148M people, The 48 Senators who support voting rights rep 182M people.

That's 34M people silenced!

/2
When asked about Black voter suppression, GOP Senator McConnell said, "African-American voters are voting in just as high a percentage as Americans.”

This is a lie, but also, he said the quiet part loud. Black people are not "real" Americans, who are apparently only white.

/3
In reality, BIPOC voters have only had even basic access to the ballot box for ~50 years. We know that even today BIPOC voters have to wait longer in line to vote, have our ballots rejected at a higher rate, & have ID requirements specified to disenfranchise non-white voters.

/4
Ask any white GOP if they'd feel represented if only Black people could vote for 200 years & white people just recently got to vote—b/c vice versa is true.

Unsurprisingly, 98% of elected GOP are white & 85% of elected Dems are white, while only ~63% of Americans are white.

/5
As of 2009, more non-white Americans are born annually than white Americans. By 2027, more non-white Americans will become eligible voters annually than white Americans.

And this is the crux of it. A 98% elected white GOP fears demographic change & are focused 100% to stop it
/6
GOP screams "all lives matter" & "I dont see color"—while denying voting rights to non-white voters

That's clear from racial gerrymandering, voter ID laws targeting BIPOC voters, voter purges, disproportionate racial incarceration, propaganda claims of mass voter fraud,& more
/7
We cannot have a more perfect union built on justice unless we have equal voting rights. And until we elect leaders who reflect the diversity of the American experience, we prevent our own progress.

So let's wrap up by talking about solutions. Three things everyone can do...

/8
1. Volunteer for a local candidate or any candidate you support. Knock doors. Make phone calls. Send text messages. Don't give in to apathy. Get involved and get those around you involved.

I cannot emphasize how important it is for you to get your circle of friends involved

/9
2. Consider running for something yourself. Check out @runforsomething (for example). Local and state officials decide federal districts, which impact federal legislation ultimately.

Use the free resources already available to learn how to run. Don't wait. Do it. DO IT.

/10
3. Donate to Dem candidates fighting for justice. I ran for Congress & you all made the difference. I've now launched Common Purpose to support racially diverse & historically ignored candidates. $5 or $500 — we need your support
secure.actblue.com/donate/cp_qasim

Donate what you can

/11
We must be in this for the long haul. As John Lewis said, "Democracy is not a state—it is an act."

Act locally, consistently, & compassionately. I believe in our nation's founding promise of becoming a more perfect union. Let's fight for it w/a Common Purpose of justice.

Predictable fail from Chuck Todd

Todd: "Parents are saying 'don't make my kid feel guilty." And a parent of color is going ‘I need to teach reality.'"

@nhannahjones: "Your framing said 'parents.' And then 'parents of color.' So the 'white' is silent."
Also since @chucktodd keeps asking “how young is too young” to talk about racism—I was 8 the first time I was called “camel jockey” & “sand ni**er.”

If BIPOC kids are old enough to experience racism—all kids are old enough to learn about the existence of racism & how to stop it.
Moreover, 54% of US school kids are BIPOC & 46% are white, while only 20% of US teachers are BIPOC & 80% are white.

The claim that white kids are being “race shamed” by teachers—the vast majority of whom are themselves white—is absurd & w/o evidence.

On Nov 30, 1921, a mob of white supremacists in Ballinger, TX, seized Robert Murtore, a 15-year-old Black child, from the custody of law enforcement, tied him to a post, & lynched him with 50 gunshots in broad daylight.

Today is the 100 year anniversary of this atrocity
/1
A 9 year old white girl claimed a Black person had harassed her. Robert was accused and arrested, & the following day the mob demanded police hand him over. The sheriff quickly handed him over to be lynched.

None of the white supremacists were charged or arrested. Instead...

/2
A TX newspaper described the white supremacist mob as “orderly" & leaving “peacefully”—all this after violently taking the young boy’s life in a horrific lynching.

I think about Robert as I think about Ahmaud Arbery, and the similarities are frightening—even 100 years later

Most of you have heard of Crystal Mason, the Black Texas woman sentenced to 5 years prison for inadvertently voting. Her vote never counted, but she was sentenced anyway.

Meanwhile white MAGA voters are getting off w/wrist slaps.

A thread on the systemic racism behind this:

/1
Donald Hartle, a white man, voted on behalf of his dead wife for Trump. He then lied to investigators, went on a propaganda GOP funded campaign to claim mass voter fraud, & finally got caught.

Donald got ZERO prison.

Crystal Mason got 5 years prison

/2
Terry Lynne Rote, a white Iowa woman, deliberately voted for Trump twice with two absentee ballots.

Terry got ZERO prison.

Crystal Mason got 5 years prison.

A quick thread for Virginia conservatives (and progressives) as we approach Election Day, and why you should vote for @TerryMcAuliffe for Governor.

Thread

/1
If you're one of the now 500,000+ Virginians who have life saving healthcare access due to expanded Medicaid, Democrats did that.

If you're one of 50,000 Virginians suffering from drug/alcohol addiction but now have affordable treatment due to Medicaid, Democrats did that.

/2
If you're one of 781,000 Virginians who need insulin to live, and are grateful that insulin is capped at $50 a month instead of $700 a month, Democrats did that.

The GOP could have done this at any time they were in power, but they didn't. Democrats did.

Unpopular opinion but if even after 20 years you think the week after 9/11 was a week of unity, you haven't been paying attention to the BIPOC & Muslims in your life who feared for our safety & suffered a massive spike in hate crimes for something we had nothing to do with.
The myth of "unity" means ignoring The Patriot Act, NYPD warrantless spying on Muslims, dozens of states who tried to pass "anti-Shariah" bills, Gitmo, torture, drone strikes, & the Muslim Ban—all which denied the justice our Constitution promises.

These are all connected.

/2
The "unity" was if you unquestionably supported what George W called "a crusade." Otherwise, you were unpatriotic. "You're either with us, or you're with the terrorists," W famously said—whitewashing objections to killing of hundreds of thousands of Afghan & Iraqi civilians.

Sharia Law is trending b/c people think the Texas abortion ban is what Sharia teaches. No, Texas GOP extremism is 100% home grown extremism. Don't blame Sharia.

Let me disabuse y'all of this offensive & harmful ignorance, w/knowledge on what Sharia actually is.

Thread

/1
Sharia is the law of the Qur’an and literally means “A path to life giving water.”

In fact, the word Yarrah (i.e. the root of the Hebrew word Torah) means precisely the same thing. Therefore, Shariah is actually ingrained in Abrahamic tradition.

There's 5 parts to know...

/2
adab (behavior, morals & manners)
ibadah (ritual worship)
i’tiqadat (beliefs)
mu’amalat (transactions & contracts)
‘uqubat (punishments)

Shariah forbids that it be imposed on any unwilling person. Meaning, Sharia mandates separation of religion & state.

You read that right
