For #VICENewsTonight, @tomasjnavia and @joshuahersh investigated Life Care Centers of America, the largest privately held nursing home chain in the US. (1/11)
@TomasJNavia @joshuahersh Life Care Centers of America is owned by Forrest Preston, who has made billions building a nursing home empire while hiding just how much money he makes. (2/11)
Preston and the vast majority of nursing home owners use a web of companies owned by the same person — known as related parties — to move money around. (3/11)
Nursing homes report to the government how they use public dollars, and how much they pay to related parties. Those reports can be manipulated to make facilities look like they’re losing money. (4/11)
There’s no transparency showing how related parties use the $$$. In the early 2000s, the federal government sued Life Care alleging that it understaffed a Georgia facility to increase profits, as patients died. Life Care didn’t admit any wrongdoing. (5/11)
Nursing homes are supposed to have 24/7 staff to meet residents' needs. Recent studies show that more than half of US nursing homes are understaffed, and Life Care has claimed its finances are tight and cannot hire more staff. (6/11)
We obtained court documents showing the finances of Life Care. It reported a loss from operations in 2001. By the end of that year, it had loaned its related parties $100+ million and loaned Preston $27+ million. (7/11)
This data is the best glimpse we have into the finances of Life Care. Without recent financial statements, lawmakers who decide how much money to pay nursing homes have no idea how nursing homes are spending $80+ billion annually. (8/11)
We tried for months to get an interview with or statement from Life Care, but they did not respond to our requests. A crisis communication expert they hired told reporters that Life Care needed more support from the government to address COVID. (9/11)
Some states have taken action. NJ, NY, & MA passed laws requiring that the majority of money that nursing homes get go to direct patient care. There is no federal requirement, and nursing homes don’t have to file related party financial statements. (10/11)

Sinema’s vote against changing the filibuster—which kept the 60-vote margin for most major bills and effectively killed Democrats’ efforts to pass voting rights legislation—is the latest debacle to enrage the people who worked to put her in office. trib.al/A7Dj0Ej
VICE News talked to more than a dozen Arizona Democratic activists and former staffers who actively worked to elect Sinema during her 2018 race.

All of them are frustrated. All said that they’d likely vote against her in a primary if she runs in 2024. trib.al/A7Dj0Ej

NEW: LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s former chief of staff called a local Black Lives Matter chapter "annoying" and disputed the meaning of "structural racism,” according to private emails from 2016 and 2017 obtained by VICE News. trib.al/9upSzC0
Garcetti, whom President Biden recently nominated as ambassador to India, is referenced and copied on several of the emails, although he doesn’t participate. trib.al/9upSzC0
In one email from 2016, Ana Guerrero, Garcetti’s chief of staff at the time, was irritated over the praise the mayor was receiving after declaring LA a sanctuary city, where law enforcement won’t alert the feds to the presence ofundocumented immigrants. trib.al/9upSzC0

Before Roe v. Wade legalized abortion nationwide in 1973, if you were pregnant and didn’t want to be, you called “Jane”—an underground abortion network in Chicago.
trib.al/hT9ffW7
Between 1969 and 1973, the women who made up Jane performed upwards of 11,000 abortions. We spoke to Laura Kaplan, one of the activists who helped run Jane, about her experience in the network. trib.al/hT9ffW7
“We were committing multiple felonies every day,” Kaplan said. “We're talking serious jail time here—not to mention practicing medicine without a license. But that was minor compared to felony abortion charges.” trib.al/hT9ffW7

NEW: It used to be that if you wanted to undermine an election in the US, you had to travel to Washington and storm the Capitol.

Now, thanks to a new digital platform, all it takes is a laptop and an internet connection. trib.al/siCRXSr
The platform is called Polaris Recount, and the “digital soldiers” that Michael Flynn has repeatedly called to arms can now simply sign up as volunteers to act as judge and jury over the validity of votes cast in the 2020 election. trib.al/siCRXSr
Launched in late November, the platform has seen signups “gaining exponentially” in recent weeks, according to the founder, who told VICE News that around 1,000 volunteers are now looking at digital images of ballots cast in New Mexico. trib.al/siCRXSr

It took Katy’s sister just three months to become obsessed with QAnon. Now she’s abandoned her family and is living in Dallas waiting for JFK to return.

Katy’s sister, a trained nurse, left her husband and three kids, handed over $200,000 to cult leader Michael Brian Protzman, and says she’s not coming home.

“She left her children for this and doesn't even care," Katy Garner said. "She is missing birthdays and holidays for this. She truly believes this is all real and we are the crazy ones for trying to get her to come home. But she won’t.”

Misogyny on TikTok is rife. But while the app claims to be tackling it, users are finding that their reports are going ignored.

She was told half an hour later that it didn’t violate guidelines.

Within seconds of searching, @VICEWorldNews found videos uncritically airing the views of Elliot Rodger, who killed 7 people and subscribed to incel ideology. One of the videos had over 120,000 views. TikTok has now taken them down.
