This thread is based on some of the words I shared with my dear friend @SenatorWarnock last night on the eve of the historic vote in the Senate:

I don’t like using war metaphors, but when the U.S. suffered a sneak attack at Pearl Harbor, the nation didn’t quit. She got stronger, and FDR went harder. He didn’t ask for less, he asked for more.
When President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, he called the day “a triumph for freedom as huge as any victory that has ever been won on any battlefield.” We must see that the war on democracy is ongoing, and we must treat it with the same urgency and seriousness.
After last night, we need to fight for more. It’s time to pick back up the bill John Lewis wrote with his dying strength, the For The People Act. It’s still an active bill. We should bring it back up.
Voting rights, along with investment in building up the lives of poor and low-income people, must now become the centerpiece of the midterm elections in November.
We can’t just pack up and go home and act as though this is OK. To have to go through all of this in order to fulfill the promises of the 14th and 15th amendments is just wrong. We must keep the battle for the soul of the nation alive!
To vote to hold onto the filibuster in the light of insurrection is to side with the spirit of insurrection. We can change the filibuster to raise the debt ceiling, but we can’t change the filibuster to keep the democratic process from falling in? Shameful!
Call on all citizens to mobilize. Go to West Virginia, go to Arizona, and meet with the people, just as the President should. Call on all people of goodwill who believe in truth and nonviolence to mobilize and push in every way. From now through the midterm elections and beyond.
We start our M.O.R.E. tour (mobilize, organize, register, and educate) to mobilize for the largest gathering of poor and low-income people in the U.S., June 18th. This will be not a day but a declaration that we are going to use every nonviolent tool, b/c our deadline is victory.
When England was being threatened by Nazism and members of his own party were undermining him, Sir Winston Churchill called on the people to have an indomitable spirit: “We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. ...
“We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be; we shall fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets and on the hills. We shall never surrender.”
We must not surrender now for voting rights or economic justice. What happened last night must intensify and embolden our agitation. We may have lost a vote, but there’s too much blood that’s been shed for the right to vote for us to stop now.
We can’t surrender, and we, the people, will ultimately win. This may be a temporary defeat, but not an eternal one. What’s been done is meant to stop a movement, but we will never stop.
