Oops I messed up that thread 🧵. Here’s a new one about the #PoorPeoplesCampaign as the first broadcast airs at June2020.org
Leaders from the @fightfor15 movement speak about their lives on wages less than $15/hour: home health aids making $10/hour, kids getting ready for school in the back of a minivan, where they lived

As @RevDrBarber said: to change the narrative, we have to change the narrator. Economic justice demands that we listen to people in poverty and act on what we hear. #PoorPeoplesCampaign
In a country with world-historic amounts of wealth, the fact that tens of millions of children live in poverty in unconscionable. Why tolerate extraordinary wealth if it's premised upon extraordinary cruelty? #PoorPeoplesCampaign
Important themes the #PoorPeoplesCampaign has elevated: people in poverty cannot be blamed for a system that immobilizes them; a civilized society provides basic needs like living wages, housing and healthcare; we can afford to do better if we resist corporate greed.

.@AprilDRyan We are organizing poor & low-income people of every race, creed, color & sexuality all over the nation to shift the narrative & build power to vote w/ everything we have. This is where all of our attention is.
We haven't been asked, but if I were asked, here’s what I would say: The meeting must be diverse: my #PoorPeoplesCampaign co-chair @liztheo, diverse clergy & at least 3 impacted persons who we see as leaders.
The meeting should be moved offsite to a church in a community impacted by poverty & systemic racism. The entire meeting must be open to the press. No opening photo op & the rest is closed.

.@GovernorKayIvey's plan to "re-open" Alabama this week shows no regard for human life & is prioritizing the greed & profit of the few over the health of the majority. All people of conscience should stay in place & defy these policies of extremist governors.
This same state has blocked Medicaid expansion & living wages. 2.1 mil Alabamians are poor or low wealth. 420K are uninsured. The reopen plan, driven by profit & greed, will cost lives & have long-term economic consequences & greatly impact poor & low-income folks & ppl of color.
The way we actually save our economy & support poor & impacted people is by passing a real emergency relief bill that includes all people & by implementing the other demands of the #PoorPeoplesCampaign: moveon.org/poverty

And to @BernieSanders, we hear you over & over say “working class, which we understand. But remember: when MLK talked about democratic socialism, he was building a #PoorPeoplesCampaign focused on addressing poverty, racism & militarism.
We need to hear on every stage how your vision addresses poverty by name. Poverty & systemic racism together—not just criminal justice reform, but also voting rights, resegregation of schools, destruction of Native American lands, ecological devastation & the war economy.
Those who are responding, you can’t hear everything as an attack. We have had over 30 debates since 2016 & not one has focused like a laser on 140 million poor people or racist voter suppression, which hacked our system long before Russia.

Folks say GOP is w/ Trump b/c they‘re afraid of him, maybe they’re afraid of the power of the civil rights movement of yesteryear, the Obama coalition, Moral Mondays, @fightfor15, @UniteThePoor, @womensmarch, @BLMNational, @AMarch4OurLives, @HRC, @ConMijente, @sunrisemvmt, etc.
They know if progressives, revolutionaries & moral agents turn toward each other & rise up in protest w/ a mighty processional to the polls, we can unseat Trumpism & mount a legal campaign against all that Trumpism has wrought. This is what they fear.
Let’s us remember, we did not get in this political and moral mess overnight. The work began many years ago w/ a long term well funded & committed attitude. We must make the same commitment not just against a man, but against an immoral movement.

There are 140 million poor & low wealth people in America. Without an accurate assessment, we are participating in a policy coverup. If we don't acknowledge poverty, we are refusing to call on these witnesses among us. This is a moral crisis. This is the state of our union.
We need a moral fusion analysis to help us see that America is on the cusp of a Third Reconstruction. politico.com/magazine/story…

How I explain intersectionality to young people: I was born in the US without the rights of a US citizen. Congress was led by men elected illegally because Black people weren’t allowed to vote. My Parents could legally be denied jobs, housing, or a seat on a bus. 1/
As a child, I heard my elders talk about which New Jersey towns were Sundown towns. I watched my parents calculate their response to store clerks in Philadelphia who made them wait until white customers had been served. 2/
My formerly enslaved great-grandfather died just a few years before I was born. The last of his children died in 1994. I can find records of his former owners and the families of our slave-owning relatives, but few records on him and those he loved. 3/

Amid deplorable conditions, poor men of different races incarcerated at Parchman Prison, are crying out for justice during a grievous humanitarian crisis. These men have sent out pictures to reveal the grueling conditions they are subjected to.
@Kairos_Center @Mississippi_PPC @UniteThePoor @liztheo @FAVOR_4_LYFE The #PoorPeoplesCampaign: A National Call for Moral Revival has heard their cry and is sending a delegation to the state capitol to demand immediate action.
@Kairos_Center @Mississippi_PPC @UniteThePoor @liztheo @FAVOR_4_LYFE Sixty years ago, Freedom Riders were sent to Parchman by Mississippi authorities who wanted to silence them. Today the movement for justice in this nation can’t be silent and must stand together to insist that our brothers behind those walls be treated like human beings.

In 2016, impacted people & clergy re-launched the #PoorPeoplesCampaign—when Obama was still in office. A moral agenda empowers ppl to challenge both parties & shift the conversation in public life.
Too often Republicans racialize poverty while Dems run from poverty. Politicians don’t come south & abandon 1/3 of the poor. Debates don’t focus on poverty & low wealth, which leaves out 140 million.
The people are building & have been building a #PoorPeoplesCampaign that is nonpartisan but very political.
Join us on the MORE tour & on June 20, 2020. Read our audit & budget at poorpeoplescampaign.org

In the cold winter weather or Oregon, I just stood and talked with PPC organizers who are part of the homeless union fighting for dignity.
They go home tonight and live in the woods, because America that is rich in empty houses and empty buildings refuses to open them to members of the human family.
But these brothers and sisters said they have joined the rising, and they won’t be silent anymore.

If conservatives want to disavow racism they must reject policies that have a disparate impact on people of color. #PoorPeoplesCampaign has written @GOP to request an opportunity to present our analysis of 5 interlocking injustices. We’re ready. washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/column…
If GOP wants to separate itself from Trump, McConnell should join Pelosi & demand Trump stop attacks on immigrants, pass immigration reform, restore the VRA, make just policies toward Native Americans, & support living wages & health care—all of which impact people of color.
And stop callling every program that helps people “socialism”—a scare word that’s been used in racist ways to attack black leadership for years.

The #PoorPeoplesCampaign doesn’t want a welfare state. We want a state that establishes justice & promotes the general welfare. There are 140 mil poor & low wealth people in this nation.
