If conservatives want to disavow racism they must reject policies that have a disparate impact on people of color. #PoorPeoplesCampaign has written @GOP to request an opportunity to present our analysis of 5 interlocking injustices. We’re ready. washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/column…
If GOP wants to separate itself from Trump, McConnell should join Pelosi & demand Trump stop attacks on immigrants, pass immigration reform, restore the VRA, make just policies toward Native Americans, & support living wages & health care—all of which impact people of color.
And stop callling every program that helps people “socialism”—a scare word that’s been used in racist ways to attack black leadership for years.

The #PoorPeoplesCampaign doesn’t want a welfare state. We want a state that establishes justice & promotes the general welfare. There are 140 mil poor & low wealth people in this nation.
Working to change these numbers is not socialism. It’s justice, constitutional consistency & a moral mandate. To dismiss programs like Social Security, Medicaid, living wages, & health care as socialism is mean and immoral hypocrisy.
When we talk about 140 million poor & low wealth ppl, we’re talking about...

I was grateful to share the #PoorPeoplesCampaign’s call for a #RevolutionOfValues w/ @TheDemocrats & pray the @GOP will accept request to hear our demands too. We can’t revive American democracy w/out 43% of us who are poor & low wealth.
And we can’t tackle poverty w/out challenging the systemic racism that has kept black, white & brown people from coming together in fusion coalitions.
We know how to come together thru moral fusion organizing. It’s the only thing that’s ever pushed this nation toward a more perfect union. #PoorPeoplesCampaign. Join us! poorpeoplescampaign.org

#Bernie2020 #FeelTheBern #NoMiddleGround
Let's tackle your tweet about how us Berners have no respect, morals, integrity etc.

We actually do! And a LOT of it!

Bernie's movement is a moral movement which has lots of similarities to MLK's #PoorPeoplesCampaign.

#Benie2020 /2
We believe in human rights that many Democrats themselves don't believe, like giving those incarcerated the right to vote as example. We also believe things like EDU are human rights along with housing.

Note to @JoeBiden & other candidates:
Dems often fall into trap of talking abt poverty in same breath as Black ppl, as if poverty is always abt ppl other than white folks. There are more poor white ppl & children than black, when you look at raw numbers. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
The issue is not that poor black & brown children are as smart as white children, but that all poor children— red & yellow, black, white & brown— deserve health care, high quality education, parents w/ living wages, a clean environment & equal opportunity.
Also it should be noted that Republican politicians who get elected thru racist voter suppression & gerrymandering, which are tools of white nationalism, pursue policy agendas that hurt poor & low wealth ppl, who are mostly white!

We must be scared to life by white nationalist terrorism & demand that Congress take action on both assault weapons & Trump’s policy violence against immigrants.
We must link up & commit to do MORE from now til next November. #PoorPeoplesCampaign
And we must call on all 2020 candidates unite behind a vision of rejecting the words, the works & the war of racism. petitions.moveon.org/sign/president…

The testimonies of people like Robert Taylor living in an area known as #Cancertown are powerful, and the nation needs to hear them. Please share this livestream now and tell others to watch now: breachrepairers.org/livestream
All of the issues of the #PoorPeoplesCampaign intersect here in Louisiana. When we talk about addressing systemic racism, we’re talking about addressing disparate impacts on black and brown communities like we see here. #Cancertown

Nearly one year ago, my #PoorPeoplesCampaign co-chair @liztheoharis and I were arrested with many others at the Capitol attempting to shine a light on the struggle and fight of the nation’s 140M Poor and low-income.
Today we return to Capitol Hill, two theologians donning religious vestments and stoles reminding those who invoke the Bible that Jesus was a poor man.
We return alongside members of our movement who represent poor and low income communities across the country to testify in front of the House Budget Committee not to lobby Congress, but to reveal the faces behind the facts of poverty.

The #PPCMoralCongress Presidential Forum showed the power of moral fusion organizing. It showed the world this is not a movement FOR the poor, it's a movement WITH the poor.
Yesterday's forum wasn't about the candidates. It was about the #PoorPeoplesCampaign family that came together and declared we're not waiting on the system to be loud about the crisis, WE'RE going to be loud about the crisis.
We're adding faces to the facts, forcing the media + politicians to pay attention, and refusing to be siloed. We're fighting together against systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, the war economy, and religious white nationalism. And we're not done yet.

@peterdaou Hi Peter! I'll explain this in full.

This may be a bit long winded but I'll do my best, ok?

While the narrative between #NeverHillary & #NeverBernie may look very similar on the outside, I feel there are very huge differences. /1
@peterdaou For us Berners, it is all about issues & policy . That & only that. Many of us, like myself, are NOT Democrats. I once was but I left the party in the 90s over it's refusal to support gay rights. As it is now, I'm a Green & I am crossing party lines to vote for Bernie. /2
@peterdaou Are there other Dems I would vote for? Yes there this time around. Mike Gravel being one.

For us though, we don't care what party someone is a member of, we care about who will help people the most in an age when 50% of American's can't afford the basics. /3

Themes from the opening and keynote speaker at @UBSSW Poverty is a Human Rights Issue: 4th Annual Symposium:
- Poverty is nuanced
- It is based on the history of the United States and US Social Policy
- Many “good” policies to integrate individuals have been create but..
#PHRI
Have been created so marginalized communities can be integrated because profits have been able to be made off of their exploitation (ie. Predatory Lending allows credit, for profit education allows debt and worthless degrees) #PHRI #MacroSW #Policy
- There are many two tiered systems (4% loan rates vs 11% loan rates).
- Military budget
- If we have Medicare for all, how do we ensure a second system for the wealthy doesn’t get created so we don’t wind up back where we started? #MacroSW #PHRI

We lost an LDF legend - Ms. Jean Fairfax. If you don’t know about her please take the time to read our tribute. Organizer, education visionary, master strategist who shaped and influenced Title I. naacpldf.org/our-thinking/l…
The work of Jean Fairfax spanned nearly half a century. The great Derrick Bell first met Fairfax when she was organizing rural families in Mississippi around education in the years after Brown. He writes movingly about her in his book Silent Covenants.
As Director of @NAACP_LDF’s Division of Legal Information and Community Services, Jean Fairfax oversaw the publication of groundbreaking and influential reports about poverty, employment discrimination and education.

Our monetary system obfuscates what people are contributing to society. The assumption that because someone has money, they are contributing to society, is false, as is it false to assume those without money aren't contributing.

#PoorPeoplesCampaign
#BasicIncome
#GreenNewDeal
We created a private property system which locked up resources behind walls & then decided to create keys to those locks called money. Not only is it incorrect to assume that because someone lacks enough keys, they don't deserve access to what they need to survive, it's immoral.
Meanwhile, the ownership & inheritance of locks leads to the passive accumulation of more keys, and in such a system where working for lock owners is required in order to obtain keys, and doing nothing but having a lock leads to keys, we perpetuate an unjust system of domination.

#TuesdayThoughts: I wasn't able to be as productive as I wanted to be this year given an (often-ass-kicking) autoimmune disorder, but here's a thread of a few highlights.

Ok, America. Your July 4th/Independence Day thing is coming up. Here are a few things that I think you should re-read or read for the first time. I have included audio where possible so you don't have any excuses. 1/
To get your hearts, minds and souls in order, I think you should start with Rev. Dr. William Barber. He is an important figure in my life and has taught me what this work looks like morally and practically. I am thankful to God for him. 2/
"I say to you tonight, there are some issues that are not left versus right, liberal versus conservative, they are right versus wrong. We need to embrace our deepest moral values and push for a revival of the heart of our democracy." Rev. Dr William Barber 3/

Today was the last Moral Monday of the #PoorPeoplesCampaign. Here in Alabama we marched on the capitol with working people, activists, clergy and @UniteThePoor to elevate the circumstances of the 45 million people living below the poverty line in America. #TheMarchContinues
“Our country, supposedly built on justice for all, was built on slavery and genocide. But the power of the people united is greater than the people in power. And I don’t want to see my grandchildren here in 50 years.” — Tony Algood #PoorPeoplesCampaign #TheMarchContinues
“It ain’t about color, religion, sex — it’s about humanity. The upper class want to see you as a victim. I see you as someone struggling for justice, not for a few but everyone. Everyone needs this work.” — Imam Salbri #PoorPeoplesCampaign #TheMarchContinues

#SteveBannon has dangerously and erroneously co-opted my father’s name, work and words.

Bannon’s assertion that my father, #MLK, would be proud of Donald Trump wholly ignores Daddy’s commitment to people of all races, nationalities, etc. being treated with dignity and respect.
My father’s concerns were not sectional, but global. He was an activist for the civil rights of Black people in America, but he was also an activist for human rights. #MLK
Further, he would not refer to people as “illegal aliens.” The term is degrading and does not reflect his belief that we are all a part of the human family. #MLK

The story of America is not a struggle b/w liberal & conservative visions of common life; it’s the story of a plantation economy struggling against everyday people for power & control.
Every successful effort to expand democracy—from abolition to women’s suffrage to labor & civil rights—has been driven by a moral movement among everyday people.
The plantation economy resisted moral movements by investing in #slaveholderreligion. Preachers who defend anti-democratic policies are well-funded by the corporate elites & those who remain quietly apolitical are rewarded.

The speed and force with which the Trump Administration and Republicans are moving to make the lives of people with low-incomes even harder is both appalling and disorienting. Here is today’s brutal move (thread):

Yesterday they took away protections for people who are targeted and steered towards predatory loans.

And threatened to make people who get housing assistance more vulnerable to homelessness.
