Poor and low-income people accounted for more than a third of all voters overall in the 2020 presidential election, and their turnout was especially strong in tight battleground states, according to a study @UniteThePoor released today.

breachrepairers.org/press-releases…
The study, titled “Waking the Sleeping Giant: Low-Income Voters and the 2020 Elections” also shows that of the 168 million people who voted in 2020, 59 million — 35% — were poor or low-income, meaning they have an estimated annual income of less than $50,000.
The 2020 presidential elections saw the highest voter turnout in U.S. election history, including among low-income voters.

While we are waiting for a response from the White House, please pray for me. As a representative from the #PoorPeoplesCampaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, I’ve been invited by the Vatican to join other moral religious leaders at a poverty-focused conference,
hosted by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences on October 3-4. I am honored to be delivering a talk on “Coalition-building and bridging religious communities for poverty mitigation.”

In his most recent encyclical, @Pontifex wrote that the “magic theories” of market capitalism, trickle-down economics, and neo-liberalism have failed and that the world needs a new type of politics that “promotes dialogue and solidarity and rejects war at all costs.”

WATCH: Moral Monday Press Conference | Which Side Are You On Senator Manchin? #PoorPeoplesCampaign twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
Sen. Manchin is on the wrong side of poor and low-wealth people in his state and in the country.

Today we’re launching a national call-in to flood his phone lines today and all this week!

The filibuster has been used in bad ways, and for Sen. Manchin to continue to use it is wrong.

Nothing was wrong with the For The People Act, which the late Rep. John Lewis actually wrote. We don’t need Manchin’s “Freedom to Vote Act.” Voting is a right, not a freedom.

If the revised voting rights bill is truly strong, truly what John Lewis would've wanted, truly what’s needed and not something Manchin has watered down & compromised away to please the US Chamber of Commerce and Republican extremists, then the full movement might support it. ...
But if it's not, those of us in movements that are free to speak the truth, along with seasoned civil rights leaders, voting rights lawyers, and religious leaders will expose it. The attacks in this moment are too real for us to just keep going through the motions.
When the details of the bill are read, we will find out if it was compromised down to weakness. There can be no moderate position on voting rights and equal protection under the law!

Super storms, because of climate change, are destroying lives.

Refusing to be vaccinated is destroying lives.

Refusing to raise the minimum wage is destroying lives.

Refusing to fully address poverty is destroying lives.

Refusing to protect voting rights is destroying lives.
Refusing to have universal healthcare is destroying lives.

Manchin and Republicans refusing to break the filibuster is destroying lives.

Corporations and the greedy rich getting more and more money while poor and low-wealth people are still not lifted is destroying lives.
The only way out is to embrace a #ThirdReconstruction agenda & build a mass #MoralMovement that seeks love, justice, and truth. An agenda to fully address poverty and low-wealth.

Good try, Sen. Manchin, but I bet you didn’t have voting rights lawyers or anyone representing miners or poor & low-wealth people in that meeting. We’ve challenged you in public because we see what you’re doing.

Stop hiding behind the coward filibuster and stop lying to your people. Either be a man and tell them the truth about your bowing to the whims of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, or repent and stand with the poor and low-wealth people of West Virginia and the U.S.
Sen. Manchin, we challenge you to meet with the #PoorPeoplesCampaign and have an @APnews reporter and @CharlesMBlow and @RolandSMartin in the room.

Thank you @SpeakerPelosi for meeting with a multi-racial group from the #PoorPeoplesCampaign today. Our message is clear: Hold the line. Voting rights (Voting Rights Advancement Act & For The People Act) cannot be separated from economic justice ($15/hr living wage). #HoldTheLine
We pray that @POTUS @JoeBiden will meet with a multi-racial group from the #PoorPeoplesCampaign, like @SpeakerPelosi did today, and then go to Texas, go to Arizona, go to West Virginia, and then go to the well of the Congress & give a major speech to reset this debate.

To the movement in this moment: we must remember the history of the struggle. We don't have to be under the same banner to be in the same battle.

The week of the original March on Washington, there were hundreds of actions all over the country.
Diane Nash was in Selma organizing 2 years before MLK & John Lewis showed up. No women spoke at the March on Washington main event. Different banners, same battle.
In the abolition movement, Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison had different political strategies. Different banners, same battle.

.@POTUS, thank you for saying yesterday you're building from the bottom up & middle out. The #PoorPeoplesCampaign supports this infrastructure plan & an even larger one that can reach down to poor & low-wealth communities, so we're glad to hear you say we still have work to do.
Let's protect the infrastructure of our democracy, voting rights, and the infrastructure of our everyday economic lives, which is $15/hr living wage for poor and low-wage workers!
We're also continuing to ask you to meet ASAP with a racially and theologically diverse group of religious leaders and poor and low-wealth leaders to discuss how we must protect the infrastructure of our democracy and economy.

TX Democratic legislators had to leave the state to lift the nation. They are lifting the need for full For the People Act, full Voting Rights Advancement Act, full $15 minimum wage & end of the non-constitutional filibuster.
But if they had to leave TX, some of us must go there. This is why the TX PPC, other groups, @fhunscripted, @BishopJDixon, other orgs & many poor & low wealth impacted people using Covid protocols are going to march from Georgetown, TX to Austin July 27-31.

The most important public religion story in the US right now may be the realignment of white Christians around values of justice, love of neighbor & the common good. A short thread on the #RevolutionOfValues that often doesn’t make headlines…
Folks who’ve been driven to extremism by the propaganda of the religious right get a lot of attention. Patriot churches. Capitol rioters w/ Jesus flags. White #ChristianNationalism is dangerous & deserves attention, but its extremism is the desperation of a shrinking minority.
As @robertpjones has noted, @PRRIpoll’s latest data shows that white evangelicals as a percentage of US population have shrunk from roughly a quarter of Americans to less than a 7th. Why?

They wouldn’t let us have sound & microphones close to Manchin's office or in the parking lot. Hmmm ...

But we know you can’t silence the people.

People are supporting from everywhere, so we are gathering for a #MoralMonday March on Manchin on Monday 6/14 at 5pm ET.
Starting location is: Magic Island Park, 165 Kanawha Blvd W., Charleston, WV 25301

We are inviting all media to hear the diverse speakers from West Virginia and to report on them to guarantee Manchin hears, the state hears, and the nations hears.
After the rally, we will march to Sen. Manchin’s office, which is approximately one mile away, and tack our demands on his office door.

On June 21 we will have a Mass Poor People's & Low-Wage Workers Assembly in-person in Raleigh, NC & online.

The American Rescue Plan that President Biden will sign tomorrow could increase income for some of America’s poor & low-income families by 20% this year. This is part of the bold action Biden promised the #PoorPeoplesCampaign last September.
While we have more work to do to make these changes permanent & address longterm inequality, President Biden & Vice President Harris have already helped shift the conversation about what is possible.
