CAIR hadn't weighed in much on Siddiqui until August, after reports that she was attacked in prison. CAIR's Dallas-Fort Worth office jumped to the case and pushed vague and unverified claims about the attack on Siddiqui.

CAIR officials made inconsistent claims about her case. In August, an official said she was no longer in solitary confinement. A month later, at a rally outside her prison, the same official said she had been in solitary for 48 days.
The Pakistani foreign office said Siddiqui sustained "minor" injuries and was "doing well." CAIR had a different take. They said she suffered a "brutal attack" and was left wheelchair bound.
It's hard to know how Akram learned about Siddiqui's case or what the spark was for him. But the rhetoric pushed out about her in the US spread globally.
