After I filed my complaint with the GA DOE and I received the ruling, I was ecstatic. They ruled in my favor that @CobbSchools had not provided my boys’ a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.
I thought I was finally getting somewhere and that Lawson and Camden would potentially be finishing their sophomore year in-person. Unsurprisingly, my excitement didn’t last long.
The superintendent was doubling down on his stance and was even lessening the microscopic mitigation the county had been doing.
IEP Amendment meetings were scheduled and I got absolutely nowhere. No guarantees my boys’ could sit 6 feet apart from others and couldn’t have the bare minimum put in place to have those close to them wear a mask.
Oh but it’s ok because my boys’ are more than welcome to wear masks. When I asked if they could ASK a couple of close friends (that I know take precautions) to eat with them outside of the cafeteria I was told they couldn’t force someone to eat with them.
So the solution was they won’t eat in the cafeteria but they get to spend that time by themselves.
There are zero mitigations put in place that would allow them to return to in-person learning safely.
Imagine a child dealing with health issues from as early as they can remember. Doctors, surgeries, feeding tubes, hospital visits. A lot of high risk kids have been through more hell than most adults can imagine.
The district doesn’t care about their well-being and academic success, they care more about politics. I was told “the district can’t please everyone”. So they worry more about pleasing the masses rather than the lives of the students and staff.
After the amendment meetings I had to explain to my boys’ that the district STILL isn’t willing to make school safe for them. I’ve spent many nights crying over what their life has become. I feel guilt because my health issues were passed on to them.
I feel frustration over not being able to do enough for them. Most of all though, I feel an immense anger at the school district and all of the people not willing to wear a freaking mask to protect others.
I am disgusted with the Superintendent and the four board members who sit back and do nothing. How do they get away with this lack of regard for their students and staff and their lack of transparency?
What good is filing a report with the States Department of Education when the district still isn’t in compliance? What do we have to do to be heard? It shouldn’t be this hard. @georgiadeptofed
