The South Australian border opening in November has caused more heartbreak, health and economic devastation, than Western Australian border remaining closed. I am so sick of trying to convince people to stop opposing health restrictions which SAVE LIVES! It’s called priorities.
Ask South Australians which they’d prefer. To be watching community suffer covid in their thousands, hospital system imploding, their lives completely upended by constant worry and anxiety, businesses suffering and people dying, or not being able to host visitors? Choose one.
We lived a life of freedom in SA for almost entire pandemic. We had the national lockdown and then a couple of short ones, and this amazing privilege was due to borders being closed to covid. That was such a gift, such an incredible privilege. And we threw it away. WA are SMART.
And then when WA see the shit show going on everywhere around them, they choose not to do that! Wow! Good for them! Thank goodness for the people of WA! Get boosted, get your kids vax and then deal with Omicron! SA could have done the same, but chose not to. That’s a DECISION!
If you need to be in WA desperately, the good news is you can quarantine for two weeks. I’m sure you’ll know how to pass the time because you’ve already been living like that in your covid-infested city or town, just like I havesince covid exploded in SA. Two weeks would be easy!
As you can tell I’m pretty passionate about this point and won’t be deterred from it: covid restrictions might be inconvenient, but they SAVE LIVES. That’s got to be the priority. For everyone. Including those who are inconvenienced by restrictions like closed borders.
Quite a few people have accused me of not showing enough empathy for people separated by closed borders. I’m sorry if I’ve been using up all my empathy for my community who are currently being smashed by covid. South Australians are suffering. People are dying. It’s horrible.
Yesterday 88 Australians died. I felt a lot of empathy for their families. It is devastating to think of the permanent separation they are experiencing - the grief and the what ifs. These people are suffering and dying from a preventable illness. WA don’t want or deserve this!
As soon as the virus emerged in early 2020, my attention was completely focused on methods to contain the virus. Obviously when we learned how deadly it is, the goal had to be to try to stop people catching it. The health restrictions were something to CHEER - not to oppose!
It became clear immediately that those very restrictions were going to be characterised as the problem, instead of the virus. By the media. By loud voices on here. By the Liberal govt. Health policies have become a stick to beat Labor govts with. It’s been a horrible two years.
In saying that, I would have thought that once everyone saw what ‘living with the virus’ actually looked like, they might understand the restrictions aren’t as bad as the virus. That not visiting your family interstate is not as bad as your family interstate suffering from covid.
WRONG! So many of the anti-restrictions crowd, and even those you wouldn’t expect, have turned on WA govt when they announced the border wouldn’t be opening as planned. Of course it won’t be! What sane government would inflict this catastrophe on the public ON PURPOSE? Crazy.
So, to wrap up, if you’re opposing WA border closure, or just one of the many people who seem to have more time and empathy for those separated temporarily than those separated forever, please have a think about showing some love for people of WA and cheering their closed border.
Right now the most loving thing you can do for WA is not to visit them, and to tell them you’re ok with that because it means they won’t be living the nightmare the rest of us are. Health policies and restrictions SAVE LIVES. They’re to be celebrated. Thanks for reading. End.
