Learn how to use TikTok sounds in 5 minutes and 5 steps 👇
A bookmark-worthy /// THREAD /// 🚩
Pay attention to audio and sounds on TikTok - it’s crucial for brand success (and going viral).
For brands that still don’t leverage trending or create original sounds - you’re leaving money on the table.
First, some key points:
- 9 out of 10 TikTok users agree that sounds are vital to the whole TikTok experience
- Brand linkage and recall increased 8X when brands used distinctive sounds (when compared to logos, visuals, colors, and slogans)
Knowing this, let’s learn how to use sounds quickly:
1 - What is a TikTok sound?
TikTok sounds can be anything from a catchy part of a song, dance challenge songs, a funny noise, a short clip from a TV show - anything really.
Many TikTok sounds go viral and become trending sounds which increase your chances of being shown on users’ FYP feeds.
2 - Types of sounds
You have two options:
➔ Use a trending sound
Use a pre-recorded sound you find in TikTok’s sound library, Discover, or FYP feed. Trending sounds increase your likelihood of going viral.
➔ Create original audio
Brands can create their own sounds using voice only. This can be anything like voiceovers, commentary, people singing original catchy lyrics, etc.
Original audio tracks can later be used by other TikTok users, greatly increasing your brand reach and exposure.
3 - Where to find sounds?
Three options here:
➔ The TikTok Sound Library
You can find it by clicking the “+” in the bottom middle. Then, go over to Sounds at the top middle of your screen.
The sound library is very user-friendly.
It’s organized by genre, popularity, dances, trends, and more.
➔ The Discover page
The second way you can find sounds to use is by going over to the Discover button at the bottom of your screen, and then clicking on Sounds from the menu.
➔ The FYP feed
Finally, you can simply Add to Favorites and save for later an audio you like in any TikTok that appears when you scroll your FYP.
To do that, simply click on the audio you see under the video caption, and a popup will open, asking you to “Use this sound” right away, or “Add to Favourites” to use later.
*Optional - if you want to do your research before touching around in the app, just go to Google and search “TikTok trending sounds at the moment”. Get some inspiration this way.
4 - How to add sounds to videos?
When adding sounds to TikToks, you have 2 options:
➔ Add sound to existing videos
If you want to add a sound to an existing video you filmed on your camera roll, you first have to upload the video by clicking the “+” button at the bottom.
Then, go over to Sounds in the left bottom corner.
It will open the TikTok Sounds Library.
Here, you’ll see two tabs - Discover and Favorites. You can browse and look at the recommended sounds in the Discover tab. Or, go straight to Favorites if you already have saved a sound you want to use.
When you choose the song, you’ll have to click and drag the soundwaves and choose a part of the sound you want to use.
➔ Add sound to new videos (film with the sound)
Some brands and creators want to film with the chosen sound in real life.
Like this, you can follow dances or adjust your content to the sound without too many edits.
To start filming a new video with sound, tap on the “+” button at the bottom of your FYP. Then, click on Sounds at the top bar. Choose a sound, and start recording your video.
The chosen sound should play as you film.
5 - How to create an original sound?
Major artists gained popularity thanks to TikTok. Independent artists and creatives can use TikTok’s original sounds recordings to gain exposure and hope for virality.
But, it’s also a great opportunity for brands that know how to leverage it.
You have two options of creating an Original Track for a TikTok:
➔ Talk while you film in-app
You can create your original sound directly in the app if you’re filming and talking.
Like this, you can match the content to the sound much better, but it requires multiple takes until perfection.
➔ Record a voiceover
Your second option is to record a voiceover after filming the video in-app or on your phone camera.
