This is from today’s “Defeat the Mandates” rally. We went down to the Lincoln Memorial yesterday, unaware that preparations for this event were already in full swing. They were blasting a song with the chorus “We don’t care what they say - It’s God over the Government.”

None of this is surprising. But I must say that the extent to which militant theocratic / fascistic movements are enabled to assert their dominance in the public sphere under the guise of “pushing back” against the government’s pandemic response worries and frightens me a lot.
That doesn’t mean that everyone attending this rally necessarily subscribes to these militant, fascistic, Christian nationalist ideas, of course. But, you know, look around - if you don’t like the company you’re in, maybe don’t participate in such events.
I usually don’t talk about personal feelings on here - but you know what, seeing the Lincoln Memorial become a stage for these rightwingers and their fascistic dreams of committing violence against their enemies, seeing that with my own eyes: it made me profoundly sad and angry.
My wife and I love to take our little boys down to the Lincoln Memorial: It always reminds us of the promise of American democracy - a democracy that never has been yet, but one day might be. The people rallying there today? They are what that promise has always been up against.
