I can save thoughts and replay them in my head already. That is the definition of memory. Whatever this science fiction purports to be is nothing more than a fantasist’s nighttime emission.
You can make the valid argument that the ultra-rich philanthro-technojisms could spent their money fixing real problems instead of low orbit phalussing or this jibber jabber. But also these projects suck attention and funding from real progress.
Human-machine interfaces are a real and serious branch of neuroscience, for understanding basic brain function, and for trying to restore function in people with spinal defects and paralysis.
What happens when galaxy brains like this (or I dunno, Theranos?) announce their new vanity projects is that they suck investment and funding away from real scientists doing real work in these fields.
And when they fold in three years without much fanfare, or with a court case, real researchers are left with a public perception that their field is broken. This drives me nuts.
Technofixes for problems that don’t exist. They’re just rich tourists. And everyone hates rich tourists.
Morning everyone 😬💰💰💰
Addendum: for those rightly pointing out this type of idea might be transformative for Alzheimer’s: you think no one has thought about this already? 1000s of real grown up scientists work on this exact problem every day, without the fanfare or funds of Darth Tax-Avoidance.
How much is a PhD student? Or a postdoc? A billion dollars could fund thousands of young and mid career researchers. *Thousands*. Just fund existing labs, if you’re so desperate to make a difference.
One more thing: science does not always need disruptive thinkers. Mostly it’s just doing the work. The myth of ‘think different’ is the story we tell ourselves because heresy sounds romantic - great men bucking the system.
Science is a constant revolution. Solve one problem, then solve the next, and then the next. And if you solve enough problems, one day, Alzheimer’s is of interest only to historians.

I have signed this short essay written by evolutionary biologist Armand Leroi criticising Imperial College London’s decision to remove Thomas Huxley from their campuses. Long version republished here; A short 🧵
The content of the letter adequately explains why, and I need not supply further details here. However, here is some broader personal context. I support the removal of Galton and Pearson from UCL’s campus, and indeed was involved in the decision to remove RA Fisher.
I’ve written about this and other historical reassessments of our intellectual forebears in an academic paper, in the mainstream press, and in my new book (link in bio) bit.ly/3pQWacz
Introduced the teen F1s to the Alien trilogy and here are the results:
Alien not as good as I remembered, Aliens as good as I remember it, Alien3 much better than I remember it.
Alien is amazing but shows signs of Scottitis, that is atmosphere and design over structure or script. Alien3 shows signs of Fincherism, which is a compliment, and I’d like to see him make this today. Innovative camerawork, punchy dialogue, same music as Se7en.
Sidebar: Daughter very upset that both Hick and Newt were unceremoniously dispatched in the first 3 minutes of A3.
I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that JP has nurdled down this particular rabbit hole. His understanding of evolution and biology is reliably poor, and teaming up with Weinstein, Shermer and other science larping grifters was inevitable. 🥩 🦞 💰
FYI fact-check: 2016, a new strain of Ebola was discovered, more virulent and more infectious than previous versions
1999: West Nile virus mutates to become more virulent.
2021: subsequent waves of Spanish flu in 1918 were found to be more infectious than earlier waves.
I tried to warn you. Many times. But no, you were bewitched by the Big Otter PR machine. They are absolute bastards and would happily chew your face off while you’re distracted by them holding hands. 💀 🦦 theguardian.com/world/2021/dec…
I even put their evil footprints on the cover. IT WAS A WARNING The Book of Humans: A Brief History of Culture, Sex, War and the Evolution of Us amazon.co.uk/dp/1780229089/…
I have little doubt that after killing this poor man, they would’ve tried to shag his rotting corpse. For up to two weeks. BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY DO. 💀 🦦 🍆
