There was a lot of news on my beat while I've been on parental leave, I think I'll do some mini-takes.
Tucker Carlson's Jan. 6 special was particularly worrisome because it shows not only because he's basically in Infowars territory, but that Fox is willing to take the hit to let him do it.
In the wake of Carlson's Patriot Purge, Fox lost Stephen Hayes, Jonah Goldberg, and Chris Wallace -- each with more than a decade at the network. And that's after Carlson antics led to Shep Smith leaving the network a few years back. Fox brass prioritizes keeping Tucker happy.
For years, Fox highlighted the work of Shep Smith, Chris Wallace, and Bret Baier as evidence it was a real news network. The first two are gone; the third must really, really love money.
Here's the trajectory of Fox's 7 p.m. hour.
1999-2013: Shep Smith
2013-2016: Greta van Susteren
2017-2020: Martha MacCallum
2020: Rotating right-wing hosts
2021: Jesse Watters
Fox's "news" division has been totally routed.
For years, reporters have asked me if Fox hosts really believe what they say. I generally tell them what matters is what the hosts say, not whether they believe it.
But the Kilmeade/Ingraham/Hannity texts provide strong evidence that at least sometimes they are lying.
Among other things, Hannity's Jan. 6 tests suggest that Fox really really needs to settle the Dominion and Smartmatic lawsuits before discovery, it seems pretty plausible that he's texted something that would reveal actual malice.

More like Lara LOLgan.
The Ben Smith move seems like grist for theory that the destruction of print advertising has turned the news into more and more of a luxury product geared toward a smaller, dispersed, wealthy audience that can make up for that lost revenue.
That's it for now I think.

Bruno is listed with a seven-foot-frame, but he's really only 6'10" in sneakers. His arms are very long, though, and he's got great lateral movement, so he can guard everyone from wings to centers.
It's Election Day in Virginia, so here's a thread with some relevant stuff I wrote this year about the Fox/GOP effort to make the gubernatorial election all about "critical race theory."
Fox News ran nearly 100 segments on “critical race theory” in Virginia school systems from March through June, nearly five hours of coverage mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox-n…
I will be availing myself of the generous @mmfa parental leave policy for the next few months. I will not be watching Fox News. I will be staying off this site instead of randomly tweeting “THE POOP MUST FLOW” or “THE SLEEPER HAS AWAKENED” all the time. See you all in January!
1. Tucker Carlson's snide dismissal of paternity leave is in stark contrast to his network's paternity leave policy, which his male colleagues rave about. mediamatters.org/fox-news/tucke…
Left, Tucker sneering at paternity leave (and gay dads).
Right, Fox corporate doc highlighting how its "parental leave policy allows eligible new parents to bond with their children for a substantial period with full pay."

Right, Fox's Todd Piro op-ed at FoxNews.com praising the network's paternity leave policy after he returned from six weeks with his spouse and infant.
Another major organization he mentions in the piece, "Fight for Schools," is headed by Ian Prior, a political operative who previously worked at the NRCC, Karl Rove's American Crossroads, the McConnell-allied Senate Leadership Fund, and the Trump DOJ mediamatters.org/fox-news/foxs-…
Fox News regularly tries to pass off GOP activists as regular concerned parents. Yesterday they repeatedly featured the head of "Educators for Youngkin" as a "Fairfax County Parent." mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox-s…
Fox is still passing off GOP activists -- including the chair of "Educators for Youngkin" -- as simply concerned Virginia parents mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox-s…
Bill Hemmer opened a segment on Fairfax County parents "defending the right to speak out about what is taught in their kids’ schools."
Who did Fox talk to?
This "Fairfax County Parent" is a former Trump Education Department official who is now a senior fellow at a right-wing group.
