There is a direct correlation between those that didn’t like #TheLastJedi and those that don’t like #bookofbobafett (not in all cases, to be sure). What is it that these two installments have in common? Development of a beloved character who has experienced trauma. 1/
The expectations of fans who wanted to see Luke as peak Jedi neglected to take note of the fact that he was in the latter stages of his life. His experience has changed him and altered what his younger self had thought and done. He evolved beyond action figure fantasies. 2/
Boba Fett has seen some shit in his day. Was brutal in his quest for revenge and self preservation. But he was given a second chance at life and evaluated his direction and decision. He’s older and wiser but still a badass at heart. It’s just his motivation has changed. 3/
Fans of #StarWars love it for different reasons. Some for the pew pew, others for the mythology, some for the action, others for the characters. The majority of fans like it for a combination of all that. And if you don’t like the “changed by experience” stories, that’s cool. 4/
Your heroes and anti-heroes still exist. They are still the way you remember them, but as the saga has been around for 45 years, it’s stories have grown complex and the characters have gained more depth. It’s like the Beatles. “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” is A New Hope. 5/
It is classic. It works. It followed the formula and brought the success that it’s creators so rightly deserved. But by the time the group reached Sgt Pepper’s, the band was ready to go deeper and explore. Some people loved it. Others hated it. #NotMyBeatles. 6/
But the whole catalog remains. For some Sgt Pepper is their gateway to the Beatles. Others had been there from day one. But ultimately it’s all still there for fans - all fans - to enjoy what they like. #BookOfBobaFett is expanding the story and exploring the universe. 7/
If it’s a part of the character’s story you don’t care about, that’s awesome. If you don’t care about Luke’s coming to grips with the trauma of his journey, that’s cool too. But remember, many people do want those stories. And fans don’t own them, the stories are gifts. 8/
You can accept the gifts or go back to what you love. It’s so much easier to say “meh, I don’t love it” and move on than to try to tell someone why they are wrong for liking something you don’t. If there’s a piece of Star Wars you love - even the smallest bit - it’s a gift. 9/9
