We’ve been investigating Wisconsin’s partisan election review since May 2021.
Last week, we published several new documents and had significant developments in our ongoing litigation for related records. Here’s what you should know. americanoversight.org/wisconsin-judg…
On Friday, Jan. 21, a judge ordered Michael Gableman, the attorney running Wisconsin’s partisan investigation of the 2020 election, to turn over to the court within 10 days sealed copies of records related to the inquiry.
The court also ordered Gableman to appear in person this Thursday to allow the court to assess whether he was properly served after we filed our lawsuit; Gableman’s lawyer maintains, contrary to record evidence, that he was not. americanoversight.org/wisconsin-judg…
The hearing also brought up uncertainty about whether Gableman has a proper contract with the Assembly to conduct the investigation. The court ordered the Assembly to submit a copy of Gableman’s contract by today, Jan. 25.
Last week, we obtained and published records showing that the office spent more than $63,000 on staff salaries in December — including $11,000 for Gableman himself — up from a total staff budget of $28,250 in September. americanoversight.org/american-overs…
We also obtained new documents that shine a light on Wisconsin officials’ ongoing efforts to cast doubt on the results of the 2020 election, including attacks on the bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission. americanoversight.org/in-the-documen…

We’ve been investigating whether and to what extent Trump administration officials assisted the former president’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. This month, we submitted new FOIA requests to the Department of Defense to investigate. americanoversight.org/document/foia-…
We want to know what, if any, role Trump allies at the Pentagon played in this effort.
We asked DOD for top agency officials’ emails and texts with the White House about the stolen-election lie from the weeks after the 2020 election. americanoversight.org/document/foia-…
In separate FOIAs, we requested DOD officials’ emails with the Trump campaign and right-wing entities that showed an interest in delaying or halting the certification of Biden’s win. americanoversight.org/document/foia-…
Rudy Giuliani reportedly oversaw the effort to use fake “election certificates.” Christina Bobb, an anchor on One American News, was also reportedly involved.
In December 2020, Bobb — who later began raising money for the “audit” — provided Senate President Karen Fann with purported “evidence” of voter fraud, writing that Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani had “asked me to send you these declarations.”
Records we obtained also include a group text from March 31, 2021 involving Fann, Bobb, and Giuliani in which Fann passed along a document with a title that began “Pres. Fann audit hiring.”
Federal prosecutors are reviewing the fake “electoral certificates” Trump supporters submitted as part of an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, reports @CNN.
This is the latest effort to investigate the phony certificates we obtained. cnn.com/2022/01/25/pol…
The state attorneys general in New Mexico and Michigan — two of the states where Trump supporters submitted phony certificates — previously referred the issue to federal prosecutors. apnews.com/article/joe-bi…
Last week, American Oversight’s @misloan2 and co author Dennis Aftergut wrote in Slate that those responsible for the fake electoral certificates may have violated multiple federal laws, and they called for the DOJ to take up the referrals. slate.com/news-and-polit…
NEW: Records we obtained from December 2020 show contact Arizona legislators had with Donald Trump’s legal team and conspiracy theorists who tried to overturn the 2020 election. americanoversight.org/december-2020-…
On Dec. 8, 2020, Phil Waldron — the retired U.S. Army colonel who pushed baseless voter-fraud claims and helped circulate a plan to challenge the 2020 election — emailed Arizona lawmakers with a proposal for eliminating some ballots from the vote totals. rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
Waldron also included Jenna Ellis (a lawyer on Trump’s legal team who helped file lawsuits seeking to overturn the election) and Bernard Kerik (an associate of Rudy Giuliani), and Katherine Friess (another attorney connected to the efforts to overturn the election results).
There's been a lot going on lately in our lawsuit for Arizona “audit” records, and even more coming up this week. Here’s a quick rundown of the recent highlights and things to watch:
First, an Arizona judge ordered Cyber Ninjas, the lead “audit” contractor, & its CEO Doug Logan to answer our questions under oath about the failure to turn over records. The court warned that if Logan fails to appear, he could face a civil arrest warrant. americanoversight.org/arizona-judge-…
Second, the Arizona Court of Appeals ruled last week that the state Senate must immediately turn over more than 1,000 documents related to the “audit” that don’t fall under a narrowly defined framework of legislative privilege. americanoversight.org/arizona-appeal…
Today, an attorney for Speaker Robin Vos testified that he had done little to ensure Michael Gableman, the contractor in charge of Wisconsin’s partisan election investigation, had turned over all records that were responsive to our records requests. jsonline.com/story/news/pol…
We’ve asked the judge to hold Vos in contempt of court for his failure to produce records responsive to our public records requests. Today, the court held an evidentiary hearing to determine what had been done to comply with the order to release documents.
“I don’t believe I did anything,” Vos’s attorney said when asked what he did to ensure that no records were withheld. See more about today’s hearing from @sbauerAP. apnews.com/article/electi…
