🧵I spent the past hour searching for a memory of a way to visualize recipe dependencies (both steps and ingredients). It started when @dendronhq's changelog introduced me to @cooklangorg, a way to store human-readable yet parseable recipes. This led me to @adamspiers 's sketch:
Inspired by the idea of a food dependency tree and grouping ingredients by sub-step, I rooted around the "visually-explained" section of my notes, and located @W_R_Chase's pizza 🍕 from last spring. It was really close, but the search was not over
Little did I know (I left twitter and started goolging): there are multiple bodies of academia for food preparation visualization! @jaukia unearthed this gem from #futureofcoding in a paper about category theory (??) (I suppose everyone has to eat)
Of course, there were were HCI folks interested in this too ( see recipescape.kixlab.org (graphic is from a collab between the @kixlab_kaist and @magrawala 's team), using diagrams as a way to compare recipes with similar procedural structure
Hungry for more, I found @GurmanBhatia's decision tree + flow chart of how to make Kadhi in a data cookbook (!!!), also featuring gorgeous culinary visuals by @AlliTorban and @ericwilliamlin in PRINT! We need more #cooking and #dataviz collaborations...

Also realized that @janezhgw has quite a few cooking visual projects... special shoutout to this for tackling ingredients listed in inches.
(See also Jane's past writeups about menu design! bootcamp.uxdesign.cc/redesigning-fo… (thanks @enjalot for the pointer)
I decided to narrow my search and try a few process diagram keywords... this "Food Flowchart" by Tim Ripper reminded me of Eric Carle's "The Hungry Caterpillar": pinterest.com/pin/1781737289…
I also liked the iconography and swimlane style of this one! Towards the end, you can begin to picture the "trunk" of the tree as a gantt diagram, where each segment depicts how long each phase takes (and not just represent the order of operations)

Finally, I found the picture that inspired this thread🪙: I recalled @z9sx7wox had replied to my target within a quarter, and found it via linear scan of replies : a "1 recipe, 2 ways" diagram by @MikeEde_UK, made with @excalidraw :
A special shoutout to @swyx 's bettertwitter.netlify.app tool for making it possible to sanely use advanced twitter search. Without this, I would still be haunted by the unease of not being able to find this picture for at least a few months more.
