A stonkingly huge thanks to @jgcarrier for pulling together last week's session on hybrid working for assorted HR peeps.
What were the key themes?
A thread...
/1
Empower, rather than mandate.
People respond more positively to "the office is open, come in when you are ready, it would be good to see you one or two days a week" than they do to "the office is open, you have got to come back in Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
/2
Reframe productivity.
Some feel "unproductive" when they have returned to an office.
Not so - it's just a different kind of productivity.
Productivity at home - emails, research, update calls, etc.
Productivity at the office - relationships, in-person collaboration, etc.
/3
Focus on your early-stage employees.
How are you going to support those early-career people who have been missing out on that in-person guidance and support, and building up experience of what it's like to work in an office environment?
/4
Mind the gap.
Leaders: "Everyone back. Now."
Others: "Erm... No ta. I have valued the increased flexibility over where and when I work, and want to retain some of that.
Ignore employee sentiment at your peril. Your competitors will willingly take on your best.
/5
Guard against "Out of Sight, Out of Mind".
Ensure there is no "proximity bias", whereby people in the office end up with more chance of development and progression than those who aren't in the office as much.
/6
Wellbeing is king.
Make sure you are able to keep on top of how everyone is doing, and what you can do to better support them, regardless of whether they are in the office, working from home, or mixing things up.
/7
Human-centred leadership is more important than ever.
Put people at the heart of all you do.
Are your programs and processes geared up for a hybrid world?
Do they make the working lives of your people easier?
Are you inclusive with your comms and engagement?
/8
What is the office there for?
With less people coming in, less regularly, then get creative around the space you have.
Do away with fixed desks.
Get creative with spaces for formal meetings, informal collaboration, and the social dimension.
/9
What's all this talk about the future of work? It's already here...
We ran a survey amongst our European workforce to get their thoughts on all things work during Covid, and as Covid hopefully eases, about returning to the office.
Here are our key findings.
1/9
Most of our offices are in city centres and 80% of our employees rely on public transport to commute. A key consideration, given restrictions on public transport and a high level of reticence on using trains and buses in the midst of a pandemic.
2/9
Indeed, the biggest concern about returning to the office, expressed by 74% of our employees, was about contracting Covid on public transport!
