Research on the "anchoring effect" shows that people's estimates are highly influenced by the first piece of information they receive (the "anchor"). For example, in one study, participants were asked to estimate the percentage of African countries in the United Nations.
Before answering, half of the participants were randomly asked if it was higher or lower than 10%, while the other half were asked if it was higher or lower than 65%.
The participants who were anchored at 10% gave an average estimate of 25%, while the participants anchored at 65% gave an average estimate of 45%.
