#OntEd After teaching my first de-streamed course (MTH1W), I’ve learned and discovered things that will impact how I approach all of my future classes and students. This experience made me grow. A major takeaway has been the importance and impact of triangulation, DI and UDL. 1/8
We’ve all heard the buzz words, but actually putting them into practice and seeing how they benefit students has been incredible. IMO, every student deserves the right to have their unique needs met in the classroom. Every student deserves accommodations. 2/8
If a student doesn’t have an IEP, that’s okay. If I notice a student needs accommodation, I give accommodation. When I think about the instructional, environmental, and assessment accommodations on an IEP - every student CAN have these. 3/8
As teachers, we can develop our own dynamic profiles for each student as we discover what works best for them. I’ve worked with so many students this year who struggled on product-based assessment. But they thrived when we worked together and discussed things orally. 4/8
Their final grade was based more on those discussions than the products they handed in. Similarly, if I observe a student solve a problem and meet an expectation, I don’t have to wait until they re-attempt this on a product to give them a level of achievement. Triangulate. 5/8
Behavioural/classroom management issues quickly disappeared when I focused on making the environment fit the needs of my students, rather than making my students try to fit the environment. 6/8
We can’t treat our classrooms like this muffin pan. We can’t expect them to fit this perfect mold. 7/8
Instead, our classroom is like this garden. Just like students, each plant requires different amounts of nutrients, water, pruning, maintenance, etc. Some thrive on their own, while others need more attention and care. 8/8
