So. Mattarella encore will happen. It’s taken seven rounds of voting to get here. Seems that parliament has expressed its desire for stability against the wishes and stumbling efforts of the party leaders. Particularly with regard to the centre right which has fragmented.
Seems if confirmed Mattarella will not return to live at the Quirinale; will be his office of state but not residence
Mattarella confirms he is available
Letta: no victors because we are all victors within the broad majority alliance. But we recognise that neither left or right grouping had a majority to elect one of its people. Hence Mattarella. From today we go forward in a changed politics particularly the crisis on the right.
The eight vote begins. Fratelli d’Italia will not vote for Mattarella. They maintain their opposition and, one imagines, hope to attract more centre right voters who feel betrayed by the Lega’s last minute turn to Mattarella.
759 votes for Mattarella
Sends a powerful message of stability and continuity at a time when Italy needs both. But can’t help feeling that in this there is also some intimation of tragedy. It’s just a feeling. Fingers crossed.
Nice messages from @vonderleyen and Macron. EU at its finest but also recognition that Italy’s success with Next Gen You is critical for this new transfer role for the EU.
Key phrases bruciare nomi, super partes, peones, franchi tiratori, campo largo, leader dei gruppi parlamentari, scheda bianca, astensione, spallata, un vittoria per nessuna per la vittoria del paese.
Which is what Di Maio says in an impressive speech.
Grave emergency calls for a different course than that I foresaw to meet the hopes of our citizens, says Mattarella, more or less, in brief and moving statement.
Btw Federica Mango is a magnificent anchor from the Quirinale for @RaiNews
What emerges is that it was groups of parliamentarians and regional delegates who worked across party lines and factions to build the momentum and solution that averted what could have been a very ugly crisis and resulted in Mattarella’s election by 76% of the grandi elettori

Fantastic moment as the #quirinalemarathon becomes delirious. News breaks that Salvini is meeting Draghi. Rolling news presenters say, But we don’t know what Salvini is saying. @GP_ArieteRosso Gianfranco Pasquino says, I’ll tell you what he is saying. Which is, basically, …
‘Mario, my strength test putting forward a centre right candidate was a disaster. I’ve got Giorgia Meloni coming up on the outside. You can stay as PM as the national giver falls apart or you could go to the Quirinale. I can’t sponsor you but I can guarantee the Lega’s votes…
Can you help me, Mario?

A thread on coronavirus controls in Wuhan from interview on @BBCr4today 6.30ish with Xihong Lin, Professor of Biostatistics at Harvard.

Their study concluded that success lay in the use of centralised quarantine.
This removed all positives, suspected and close contacts from the community.

Positives were immediately taken to field hospitals (16 were built in Wuhan) even if with mild or no symptoms.
Symptomatic but not yet tested and close contacts were put in hotels with a private room and no central air conditioning.

All three groups were monitored and transferred upwards to field and regular hospitals if cases confirmed or conditions worsened.
