Another thing #Spotify/ Daniel Ek underestimated is just how much career artists despise them *in particular* for stripping us of our livelihoods. I don’t know anyone who’s got control over their catalogue who ISN’T starting the process of pulling it. 1/
The years #Spotify use began to dominate over downloads/CDs my publishing/mech income plummeted from 10s/thousands to hundreds, and it’s devastated the careers of so many people we all assumed were lifers. I wanted to drop them early on but my publisher talked me out of it. 2/
& he was right - dropping #Spotify wd only hurt me by making my songs harder to find by curious fans. (And Spotify dominates in Europe, which held my bigger markets) We hated it, but we all felt stuck - as indies we could pull our titles but it didn’t hurt them 3/
...and major artists with huge profitable catalogues usually don’t control them. Spotify cut a deal with the majors (who own the rights to these artists’ recorded masters) in exchange for not suing the company out of existence in the early years of its success. 4/
So, this snowball may have started with the aim to deplatform Joe Rogan, but musicians were already DYING for any way to take those fuckers down -Spotify is the worst sort of late capitalist tech parasite. They provide nothing but the tech they developed to steal your shit 5/
Artists are now actively pulling AND lobbying their publishers and labels to pull bc we’ve been fucking angry for a long time at how brutally efficient #spotify has been in devaluing and exploiting our labor. 6/
So, maybe you unsubscribed from #Spotify bc you’re sick of dipshits peddling bad science in the middle of a pandemic, but stick around for the worker revolt. In the meanwhile Tidal and Apple payout slightly better. 7/
