STATEMENT | Help send Morita Alegre home! Peasant women group calls for support for widowed political prisoner
Manila, Philippines - The Amihan National Federation of Peasant Women joined political prisoner rights organization Kapatid in calling for support for Morita Alegre, a 75 year old peasant woman who was released after 16 years in prison.
Morita was granted commutation of sentence on December 24, 2021, and walked out of the Correctional Institute for Women on January 28, 2022. The peasant women group appealed to other organizations and individuals for assistance flying Morita home to Sagay, Negros Occidental.
“We congratulate the successful lobbying efforts by Kapatid, Karapatan, and other groups that helped pave the way for Morita’s long overdue freedom.
Her story is a heartbreaking example of the lack of humanitarian consideration given to political prisoners, particularly victims of land grabbing,” said Amihan National Chairperson Zenaida Soriano.
On June 13, 2021 her husband Jesus Alegre, a farmer and fisherman, tragically died of renal failure and multiple complications despite repeated appeals for his humanitarian release. At 75 years old, Jesus was the 2nd oldest political prisoner in the country.
The last time Morita saw her husband was during his wake, after Kapatid petitioned the DOJ to allow her to see his body before it was flown to their hometown for burial.
Morita, Jesus, and their son Selman were convicted for the killing of the bodyguard of local landlord and alleged land-grabber Avelino Gaspar. However, the Alegres were actually victims of landgrabbing.
“We invite the public to donate to Kapatid’s efforts to bring Morita home, so that she may finally visit the grave of her late husband. After the years of injustice she has suffered at the hands of the state, she deserves the time and space to grieve,” Soriano added.
Morita also seeks support for Selman, 47, who remains jailed at the New Bilibid Prison, Muntinlupa City.
