People with these views are emboldened. In the summer of 2020- anti-mask, racist conspiracy theorists- espousing similar views set up camp at the War Memorial for 3 months!! No wonder some felt they could park there this time. (cont)

In the summer of 2020 - so called “patriots” broadcast their views daily for more than THREE months encumbered at the War Memorial.
They went to PMO to “arrest”Justin Trudeau. Media didn’t pay attention until they

We (legacy media) have ignored these right wing conspiracy theorists because we didn’t want to legitimize their views or we considered them outliers. In the meantime the groups gained support and followers . See thread below on one of Freedom Convoy leaders
Why do they feel like they can stay in Ottawa indefinitely? Because we allowed some of them an extended stay in 2020.

All this to say is that we journalists need to do better explaining the linkages and contextualizing the undercurrents of extremism/ hate/racism that have exploded during this pandemic.

For the past few days the parking lot next to the RCTG stadium used by the Titans baseball team on Coventry Rd has been turned into a camp site for Freedom Convoy protestors. They have no @ottawacity permit and were not granted permission for overnight stay. (More)

Description of what downtown Ottawa residents experienced last night from a city councillor. Freedom Convoy may be overstaying its welcome.
Being the nation's capital, Ottawa gets dozens of demonstrations each year. Protestors usually have permits, stay for the day and while may be vocal in their criticism - they respect the monuments and landmarks and their significance.
I asked @OttawaPolice about the large number of people spending the night in their vehicles -- and the response was that there is no law against it if overnight parking is allowed on the street. See @_llebrun thread for sense of frustration.

A 911 call led Ottawa police enter wrong home while responding to a distress call about a potentially suicidal man. They entered the Ngoto home before dawn and left the family shaken. More context in this thread
Nadia Ngoto is a single mom of four sons who fled domestic violence years ago. They lived in shelters for years. She’s had bad experiences with police. Her teenage sons have been racially profiled and are often stopped by police. Image
But despite the odds Ngoto is a survivor. She now works at Harmony House the shelter that helped her. Her oldest son Ozzy volunteers there. Her kids are thriving at school, making their own computers. But now they feel violated again. They just moved here 2mths ago. Image

This line doesn't indicate much of change in practice:
Sloly said "they will continue to be allowed in situations to preserve evidence as long as either the chief or a designate — which can include a platoon commander, inspector, or senior officer — approves one"
And if Ottawa Police are still assuming every suspected drug dealer owns a gun, then nothing really changes. Because officers are still considered at risk..and no-knocks should be done for officer safety.

Thread: The Ontario Sunshine List is out. I wanted to know the salaries of Ottawa Police officers suspended with pay for alleged misconduct against women. Of the 8 officers we name in this story, 5 earned more salary in 2020 despite being suspended.

Deputy Chief Uday Jaswal was suspended in March 2020 - but he earned $44,000 more in 2020 than the previous year. His annual salary last year was $261,635 compared to 2019 salary of $217,448. He's facing Police Service Act charges re: sexual harassment against 3 female officers Image
Cst. Eric Post was suspended with pay in June 2018. He pleaded guilty to 5 criminal charges related to violence against four women.
His salary increased while suspended.
2019 earnings: $105, 076
2020: $112,206
