1. Today is a major FEC filing day. Pretty much every PAC and campaign committee has to show their cards.

This thread will document the companies that have abandoned the commitments they made after January 6, 2021.

Follow along if interested.
2. After January 6, @GoldmanSachs CEO @DavidSolomon condemned the attack and Goldman Sachs announced they were suspending all political donations.

On 12/20/21, Goldman donated 2.5K to @RepBlaine Luetkemeyer, who voted to overturn the election
@GoldmanSachs @DavidSolomon @RepBlaine 3. Notably, Luetkemeyer reportedly threatened to put corporations that cut off his funding on an "enemies list."

@GoldmanSachs @DavidSolomon @RepBlaine 4. After January 6, @BCBSAssociation (BlueCross Blue Shield) said it would not support members who voted "to subvert the results of November’s election."

On 12/27/21, BCBS donated 5K to @RepMikeRogersAL, who voted to subvert the results of the election
@GoldmanSachs @DavidSolomon @RepBlaine @BCBSAssociation @RepMikeRogersAL 5. After January 6, @massmutual pledged to "to any candidate who voted against certification of the 2020 presidential election results for any state."

On 12/20/21, @massmutual donated 20K to the @NRSC, which is chaired by @SenRickScott, who voted against certification
6. We will continue to parse the data, but we aren't seeing a large volume of NEW corporate donors to Republican objectors. Companies that previously donated to objectors continue to do so. Examples:

@AmericanAir
@Cigna
@FedExPolicy
@GM
@MotorolaUS
@PwC
@TruistNews

1. Zucker is successfully spinning his firing/resignation as a simple matter of failing to disclose a consensual relationship with a subordinate

But that's not the whole story
2. The woman who Zucker was in a relationship with was Allison Gollust, CNN's Chief Marketing Officer.

But one thing I'm not seeing mentioned is that before joining CNN Gollust was THE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR FOR ANDREW CUOMO Image
3. Why is this significant?

Zucker defended CHRIS CUOMO for months after it was revealed he was advising his brother Andrew on how to handle allegations of sexual harassment

He was allowed to keep doing his show

1. On Monday, a 10,055 page PDF was quietly filed with the IRS

It revealed that some of the nation's most prominent corporations have sent large donations to the GOP group behind state abortion bans and voter suppression

2. The document was filed by the @RSLC, a GOP group that delivers "wins for Republican state legislators" by "targeting national resources to support state races"

It takes credit for the fact that the GOP controls "61 of 99 state legislative chambers"

popular.info/p/corporations…
3. This year, with the @RSLC's help, GOP legislators have passed 108 abortion restrictions (including Texas' ban) and 34 laws restricting voting

The @RSLC is backed by big donations from corporations that claim to support voting rights & women's equality

If people want to run for office, I absolutely encourage them to do so

As someone who has done it, however, I can tell you it is not a "crazy impossible thing" but it is a very challenging thing in every possible way

I learned so much doing it

Including that its not for me
As a practical matter, I learned more personally knocking on 10,000 doors than I could have in a lifetime of observing politics from afar.

It's given me a deep and abiding sympathy for all candidates.

You are really putting yourself out there and it's tough
Very few people who write and report about political issues have ever run for office themselves but it helps a lot

1. A new proposal to stop Trump from stealing the 2024 election could backfire

It's a classic case of fighting the last war.

Follow along if interested.

popular.info/p/how-a-propos…
2. 147 Republicans voted to overturn the last election by objecting to the certification a few states

So the proposal floated by Dems is to make that more difficult and require a 2/3 vote in each chamber to reject certification rather than a majority

popular.info/p/how-a-propos…
3. The problem with this idea is that it misunderstands the more acute threat for 2024: A Trump-sympathetic Governor sending a phony slate of pro-Trump electors to Congress.

This is a risk, for example, if Perdue becomes the next Governor of Georgia.

1. An acclaimed MLK-themed novel, Dear Martin by @getnicced, was removed from a 10th-grade English class in North Carolina

The decision was made in a matter of hours after one parent complaint

Things get more disturbing from there

popular.info/p/north-caroli…
@getnicced 2. The superintendent who made the decision, Dr. Bill Nolte, told popular.info that he did not read the book — or even obtain a copy — prior to making the decision

popular.info/p/north-caroli…
3. The parent who complained objected to the book's "explicit language," including "GD" and "the s-word."

He suggested that providing Dear Martin to 10th graders violated the "age of consent" because "they are still adolescents."
