Alaska, why do we seem to house so many white nationalists/neo-nazis? A thread. 1/
We're aware of David Eastman, obviously, he's the talk of the moment. A member of the III% known for making racist statements, quoting Hitler, and possessing an SS knife under curious circumstance. thebluealaskan.com/coalition-to-e… 2/
We remember the swastika stickers being posted around Anchorage, which we found we in the possession of Lucas Edward Foster (27) during a drug bust for sales of psilocybin mushrooms. alaskapublic.org/2021/12/16/anc… 3/
We're aware of Matthias Cicotte, former assistant attorney general in the Civil Division, who tweeted a variety of -phobic comments and was a member of a Mormon white nationalist group. adn.com/opinions/2021/… 4/
Perhaps some of us are aware of Bret Maness, the "Alaskan Godfather of Metal" who has committed a variety of violent acts and was a promoter for the Daily Stormer Book Club (a neo-nazi org). splcenter.org/hatewatch/2018… 5/
Millennials may be familiar with Tim Gionet, aka Baked Alaska, a Grace Christian School graduate and former streamer who stormed the capitol on Jan 6, defaced a Hanukkah display in Arizona, and associated with Richard Spencer and Daily Stormer owner Andrew Anglin (and more) 6/
And anyone who has been on social media has probably seen some variety of this quote, either in meme or plain text form: 7/
But this quote is misattributed to Voltaire and actually originated from Anchorage born Kevin Alfred Strom, a "white nationalist, neo-nazi, holocaust denier, white separatist, and associate editor of National Vanguard." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Alf… 8/
Now take that knowledge as background and consider some news stories we've seen over the last few years. Remember when Allard defended the "FUHRER" and "3REICH" license plates? alaskalandmine.com/landmines/anch… 9/
How about when somebody removed the "black" banner from the "black lives matter in AK" display outside of the APC in 2020? ktoo.org/2020/09/08/hun… 10/
Do you remember when the Mat-Su school board banned I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Invisible Man in 2020? kinyradio.com/news/news-of-t…. 11/
A lesser known story, but related none-the-less, in 2019 Anchorage's own William Alexander called a LA synagogue threatening to kill their congregants while spouting slurs targeting people of the Jewish faith justice.gov/opa/pr/alaska-… 12/
Are you aware of the 1488 prison gang, the white supremacist gang that started in Alaska and spread to Arizona and Colorado, that is responsible for a variety of murders, assaults, and kidnappings? abcnews.go.com/US/white-supre… 13/
The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks known hate groups operating in each state and notes the presence of the "Asatru Folk Assembly" in Alaska, another White Supremacist organization en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asatru_Fo… 14/
I don't have a firm conclusion based on all of this, but I feel it is extremely important to keep this in mind when considering policy decisions and evaluating statements by our elected officials and those seeking office. White Supremacy ideology is present in our state. 15/15

Now that the candidates for the Assembly have been announced, I'm gonna start digging into who will be on the ballot. First up is Stephanie Taylor, who will be challenging Forrest Dunbar for East Anchorage. #ANCgov 1/
On Taylor's website, she lists her issues: Homelessness, Re-Investing in Downtown, and Taxes. Let's start with Homelessness. She claims we are "coddling" the houseless and need to hold them "accountable" for their crime and drug use. #ANCgov 2/
She continues that we must partner with non-profits and faith-based group to help the houseless. This is tantamount to saying that the city government has no direct responsibility to its houseless citizens, and rather independent orgs and churches should bear the weight. 3/
