Ottawa is a G7 capital but some residents don't seem to realize that.Peaceful protests in the nation's capital is part of democracy like in every major city whether London,Paris, DC, Tokyo, Berlin, etc. By all means act like we're small backwater rather than a G7 capital.
Ottawa downtown is mostly government offices which have been shut for 2 years. It's been a wasteland populated by drug dealers, homeless people and criminal gangs. I live here and sure the fact my local LCBO was closed yesterday was annoying. But was I freaking out? No.
To be fair, #TruckersConvoy2022 will need to have a plan to peacefully & safely accommodate both protestors and residents if the protests are drawn out. The city needs to think creatively but the mayor & some councillors have taken a hardline position mimicking that of Trudeau.
The Farmers protests in India that Trudeau opportunistically supported lasted for months and massively disrupted traffic in Delhi. Didn't hear anyone who supported the protests from here saying these must end because they're too disruptive to the daily lives of Delhi residents.🙄
The world is watching how 🇨🇦 deals with #TruckersConvoy2022 It's leaders routinely preach to the world, the value of dialogue and not taking a hardline position that could sow division yet they do exactly the opposite here. This hypocrisy will not go unnoticed.Damages credibility.
*Its*. 😬

While walking around this afternoon in Ottawa, spotted these hateful and divisive messages by Canada’s “fringe” at the #FreedomConvoy2022 protest site. Unacceptable views. 👀
Some more divisive and hateful signs from todays protest. Deplorable.
More hateful and problematic signs at #FreedomConvoy2022 . Stunned by this extreme language. What have we become.
Funniest thing I'm hearing is Lowertown is unsafe because of the protestors as if it was Shangri-La before. I live here and over the years seen gun violence go up, people shooting up, urinating & defecating next to a daycare, flashers & drug dealers threatening residents etc.
If anything there's more foot traffic and police presence in the area so it feels safer. Over the last few years, I've reached out to city officials to complain about the problems in the area. The pandemic any resident will tell you has made the area worse in many ways.
May 2021: "ByWard Market growing more dangerous, scaring visitors away: businesses". Yup definitely wasn't Shangri-La before the protestors showed up. ottawa.citynews.ca/local-news/byw…
Looks like a new convoy just rolled into town. I live in the market so I have prime view. These looked like fresh trucks coming in. My cat who makes a cameo was also intrigued.
There is a fair bit of honking and foot traffic around where I live. It's picked up since this convoy rolled in.
Am not at the protest so don’t know how big it is right now but where I live is an important intersection before you get to parliament and there has been a steady stream of vehicular traffic, foot traffic and sounds of horns all evening. No signs of letting up.
Came out of an interesting free wheeling presser with co-organizers of #TruckersConvoy2022@BJdichter and @Tamara_MVC . They're not anti-vaxxers. They're both fully vaccinated but they're opposed to vaccine mandates and excessive government interference in individual liberty.
Also @BJdichter@tamara_MVC made it clear this is a strictly non-partisan movement. It's here to stay and their goal is to influence public discourse, and perhaps nudge the politicians and thereby alter the political landscape in the longer run.
I asked @BJdichter about some of the hateful signs that have been reported around town. He said he's Jewish, @Tamara_MVC is Metis and that these people are not part of the movement and don't stand for their values. #TruckersConvoy2022
From May 2021, here's a disgusting example of an anti-semitic placard in Montreal. Note it equates the Star of David with the Swastika. I saw so little outrage at that time. Why were these hateful protestors given a free pass? Do different rules apply here?
"Whoever supports Israel is a terrorist" read this placard from May 2021 at a protest in Montreal. The howls of protests from the usual suspects were deafening in their silence. Why? nationalpost.com/opinion/avi-be…
May 2015 anti-capitalism protest in Montreal. 84 people arrested, tear gas used. Note how this story qualifies the actual violence that took place that day by saying most of the protestors were peaceful. 🙄 cbc.ca/news/canada/mo…
Today's case numbers in Ontario probably gave you whiplash but this chart is what ultimately matters. ICU admissions have more or less remained steady. Excellent news on Christmas Eve.
We had more people in critical care/invasive ventilation in Ontario in the months after Delta peak and before Omicron,at a time when ON was registering 300-500 cases on average/day.Today's case numbers of 9,500 should give you some reason to be optimistic.
