Once we are done chuckling at Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s texting the wrong Brian (he thought he was talking to Brian Daboll but he was talking to Brian Flores), we can begin to consider the enormity and boldness of this action by Flores.
The Belichick text evidence - by the way - is front and center in the Complaint used to allege that the Giants knew they would hire Daboll before even interviewing Flores. Makes Flores interview look like Rooney Rule box checking. Oops.

The NFL dodged a bullet by settling the Colin Kaepernick lawsuit before discovery and with NDAs as part of it.
The Gruden email leak from the NFLs Snyder Investigation (article in comments) was really ugly but it was obvious it was just scratching the surface. They hung Gruden out to dry and avoided further scrutiny.
The NFL got a little bruised up by the revelation that they were valuing Black lives and brains less in CTE settlement payments (article in comments). But that seemed to pass through the news cycle pretty quickly.
As @EdgeofSports has noted, we don’t know how this lawsuit will work out. We don’t know what the evidence will show about what the Giants did or didn’t do. And they’ll say they just hired the best guy. But 1/32 Black coaches shows there is a bigger problem here.
Also, it’s very clear that The Rooney Rule was never going to be more than a box checking exercise at best. That doesn’t change the culture. Doesn’t address institutional racism.
Over my years of writing at @GoodMenProject, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to speak to some of the foremost folks about “masculinity.” It’s incredible how many dots this single issue connect and how many issues it spans. A few highlights:
Last year, I had the opportunity to speak with @JYSexton, who writes about masculinity and the rise of Trump. They’re closely connected issues; Trump is an avatar of toxic masculinity. goodmenproject.com/featured-conte… via @GoodMenProject
