Burnt out and frustrated by algorithm changes and little support for creators, Instagram influencers are leaving the app, hoping to find new ways to build their brand that won’t hurt their mental health.
At the end of 2021, Kirby decided to take a two-week break from posting which turned out to be illuminating. Now, she plans to diversify her business revenue streams in order to get off the app for good at the end of this year.
Other creators have expressed similar frustrations about Instagram over the years.
Unlike other platforms, Instagram has a more hands-off approach to the creators who drive revenue to the platform, offering them little in the way of bonuses or support.
In 2021, during the company’s first Creator’s Week, Instagram announced multiple initiatives that would allow creators to make money directly through the platform. But for some, it’s too little too late.
These creators are now making changes about how they run their businesses on the app, either by stepping back from partnerships, posting less, or leaving the app entirely.
Some are even moving to platforms like Substack and Patreon to make exclusive content for devoted fans.
Since making the decision to leave Instagram, Kirby says she hopes she’s at the forefront of a new frontier for the influencer industry.
