I was so happy to listen to @Comrade_Otoa space on #oilandgas when he hosted @EllyKaruhanga the godfather of this industry in Uganda.

Hon. Dr. Elly Karuhanga broke down what the #UgandaOilFID means for the regular Ugandan using the simplest language that anyone can understand/1
and without using any technical jargon.

Here is a summary of of what I was able to glean from this his insights and thanks to @Comrade_Otoa for hosting him to share all his experience and knowledge /2
1. First and foremost the question most often asked is how can/will the regular, local Ugandans benefit from the #oilandgas economy.

The answer to this question is simply, whatever you are doing, make sure it meets best practice; the oil and gas sector will not work in / 3
isolation from every other sector, but rather, it will intersect with every sector of the economy.

2. Every Ugandan who has skills and would like to engage in the #oilandgas sector must register on the National Talent Register by basically submitting their CV on the database /4
This will enable everyone in the #oilandgas and gas sector that needs a service that matches your skills to contact you.

All players in the #oilandgas sector are required to seek services through the National Talent register /5
3. As for local businesses that want to engage in the sector to provide goods and services, they must register on the National Supplier Database.

So far 1,966 local Ugandan businesses and 696 foreign businesses have been registered.

Local MSMEs must enhance their capacity / 6
in writing winning tenders, that is bid management, corporate governance, registration and health and safety among others.

4. Every Ugandan that wants to engage in the #oilandgas sector must regularly appraise themselves with information that is readily availed on the /7
websites of @UgandaChamber @UNOC_UG and the Petroleum Authority of Uganda.

5. Several sectors have been ring-fenced for specifically for Ugandans and there are 15 categories that require that goods and services must be provided by Ugandans.

6. As an example, there will be / 8
three camps in Uganda for #oilandgas; so the camp in Buliisa at some point will have over 4,000 people stationed there.

There will be need for security services, food and beverages, basically everything that a person needs, all ring-fenced for local companies/ 9
7. It is estimated the three camps at some point will have 15,000 people stationed there. To give the scale of their food needs, each camp will need 23,000 trays per day, that is almost 70,000 trays of eggs per day for the three camps. There is immense opportunity for local /10
firms in agricultural supplies, the food value chain and catering services.

8. The human resource sector has been ring-fenced, recruitment agencies that will be involved in the hiring of people in the #oilandgas sector must be local companies. Also, office supplies /11
surveying services, clearing and forwarding, cement supply, plumbing services, welding services, environmental and impact assessment services, communication services, waste management services, insurance services, health and safety, among others. / 12
9. There are several resources that have been availed to support local content and local gainful participation in the #oilandgas sector. The Petroleum Authority is going to invest USD500k in train 200 SMEs in the 11 districts along the pipeline route.

The @UgandaChamber / 13
holds supplier conferences to provide information on #oilandgas. So keep an eye out on their website and social media handles.

The @stanbicug Business Incubator has already trained over 2,000 SMEs and continues to enhance the capacity for local /14
companies to engage in the sector.

The Ministry of Education has been internationally accredited to provide the international oil certificate through the Kigumba Training Institute, and many other Universities; this certificate allows one to work anywhere in the world / 15
and so far over 4,000 Ugandan technicians have been trained and certified. /16
Having listened to Hon. Dr. Elly Karuhanga @EllyKaruhanga I am cautiously optimistic about the social economic transformation that we are about to witness for Uganda.

I look forward to many more conversations on the #oilandgas as @Comrade_Otoa brings more industry experts/17
