If you've gone to the gas station lately, you may have winced at the prices at the pump.

So... what is happening? No, #oilandgas companies are not price gouging. Here's a brief breakdown of what's really going on.
The prices we pay as consumers are a direct result of the global market supply.

We’re currently going through significant supply disruptions, coupled with increased demand as everyday activities return to normal as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. Image
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has significantly impacted global oil supply. Russia was previously a large operator in the global energy market and has been the largest supplier of oil to Europe over the past several years.

~THREAD~ For nearly a decade @TXsharon and our field team have captured proof that #oilandgas is polluting more methane than they admit. Check the receipts below vvvv…
Methane is a GHG 86x more potent than CO2 and it is polluted at every step of the oil and gas extraction process. But science shows that poor reporting (and the forces of vested interests) keep much of this pollution (as much as half) unreported /2…
In some states we find that companies are routinely polluting methane without permits - completely off the books - while agencies turn a blind eye /3…

Excelentes preguntas @alexbrizuelamx

The IPCC is crystal clear:

We must end #fossilfuel development and rapidly scale up the low carbon economy. The world’s best scientists have the ‘tools and the know-how’ to safeguard our future. The factor we are missing is political will. 1/ #bcpoli…
Last week in the #BCLeg the @bcndp & @bcliberals MLAs debated a motion on the #LNG industry.

It was a shameful competition as they tried to out-spin one another in their support for fossil fuel subsidies. 2/ #bcpoli #ClimateCrisis
Under the @bcndp BC’s #oilandgas subsidies have gone up year over year.

BC deserves a gov't that recognizes the reality of the #ClimateEmergency. To build a sustainable, resilient economy we must stop subsidizing the industries that work against it. 3/ #bcpoli #ClimateCrisis

Today the entire @bcndp caucus clapped and hollered as Minister @BruceRalston boasted about being the gov't to welcome the largest #LNG investment in BC's history.

Shocking behavior for “climate leaders”, and shameful given the context of my question. 1/ #bcpoli #ClimateCrisis
They did this just after being told the following:

The national inquiry into #MMIWG found that man camps and resource extractive industries directly cause increased violence against Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 Spirit People. 2/ #bcpoli #Reconciliation
2) Scientific studies have demonstrated birth defects, cancers, and asthma in communities near fracking.

3) Methane is 28 times more potent by weight than carbon dioxide meaning gases leaked from #LNG production are as highly polluting as coal.

I'll be live tweeting the debate on this motion.

As a third party we haven't been given the opportunity to be on the speakers list for the motion. #bcpoli #ClimateCrisis #LNG #oilandgas
Debate on #LNG motion begins with BC Liberal MLA Mike Bernier suggesting that BC LNG can “help” with the transition away from coal.
LNG is not a transition fuel. The methane emissions from #fracking intensify the #ClimateEmergency
MLA Bernier states “we are losing billions in investment.”

No mention of billions in subsidies to prop up oil and gas industry.

Climate change is already costing billions.

Consider the costs of wildfires, droughts, floods.

More #Russiasanctions do not necessarily increase the probability of #Peace, it could end up meaning the opposite. Many rightly point out that #oilandgas revenues dull the G7 block of Russian foreign exchange and have helped stabilize the #Ruble, at least for now. But...🧵
...we've never had sanctions like this and may be losing tabs on the strategy. Is a sovereign default a pre-requisite? Is there a bleed-rate on the #Ruble that equals a bleed-rate in the #war? We want to punish--understandably--but with what outcome?
We overestimated #RussianArmy and underestimated #Ukraine, thought we needed to hit immediately. But things have changed. Russia will fight an insurgency. This gives #sanctions and #Export controls more time. It also means in conflict, the return on additional sanctions weakens.

Outside of the US, the world's oil supply is becoming increasingly heavy and sour while transportation fuels are becoming increasingly light, high-quality and ultra-low in sulfur.

Understand that Alberta is an oligarchy.

Sure things here might not be quite as bad as Russia or parts of the US, but that doesn’t make the way our petro-state oligarchy runs okay.

A Thread 🧵

1. Russia is responsible for 4.2% of the Worlds aluminium 🏗 Supply.

2. Russia happens to be the 3rd largest producer of Petroleum🛢after Saudi Arabia & the US & is the 2nd largest producer of Natural gas⛽️after the U.S.

The main Consumers of Russian Oil and Gas 🇷🇺🛢are the European Union 🇪🇺💶(48%) & China(31%)🇨🇳.

We released the expanded @IEA Global #Methane Tracker today with our latest estimates of emissions and abatement potential. 🔗

For the first time, we've built in info on policies and regulations. I want to highlight a few interesting findings.

Over 110 countries joined the #GlobalMethanePledge last year, which targets a 30% reduction in human-caused methane by 2030.

But without concrete policies and regulations, the world won't meet this target. Voluntary action by companies alone won't be enough.

Today's new policies page of the Tracker shows what tried and tested policies can achieve.

These policies have already been proven effective. If every country adopted them, emissions from the oil and gas sector could be cut in half.

💥New report💥

Tax breaks for North Sea oil and gas extraction isn’t just bad for the climate, it's bad economics 🛢️🛢️🛢️

Our report out today explains why it doesn’t make sense to extract the last drop:

A thread 1/7 Image
The North Sea is an increasingly expensive place to drill for #oilandgas .

2/7 Image
With tax breaks, the UK government is masking the true costs of North Sea #oilandgas and tipping the scales in favour of more extraction.

But who is benefiting? UK tax revenues from oil and gas are tiny compared to Norway.

The Global Oil Balance is Much Tighter Than is Believed

#oilprices #CrudeOil #energycrisis #opec #ESG #GreenEnergy #fintwit #eft #oott #energy #oilandgas #SaudiArabia #RussiaUkraine #RussiaCrisis #ElectricVehicles
Last week’s events will be remembered for many reasons but for us, the major market mover was the International Energy Agency’s admission that global oil demand is wickedly higher than what the agency was willing to admit previously…

Why did it take so long for the agency to reconcile its data series? It is a mystery. You might be thinking that this is some sort of academic debate but it is not.

In our previous columns, we have written about the topic of “missing oil”…

A thread on my piece around fuel price hikes. Come 10th March, sharp fuel price hikes are coming. How sharp ? $1 increase in Crude leads to a 50 – 60 paisa/ litre increase in retail fuel prices. Total increase could be as high as Rs 10/ litre. 1/7…
Govt & Oil Companies say they're protecting consumers. Guess what ? April '20 -Crude fell as low as $9.12/ barrel. What did Oil firms do ? Stopped price revisions for *82 days*. In May 21, we saw 16 fuel price hikes. Consumers were hit by no benefit & then record high prices 2/7
Any relief ? Yes. In November last year, a sizeable Rs 5/ltr cut in excise duty on petrol and a Rs 10/ltr cut in excise duty on diesel. But fuel earnings for the Govt have been frankly, great - A robust ₹ 4 lakh crores this year and ₹3.35 lakh crores project next year. 3/ 7

I was so happy to listen to @Comrade_Otoa space on #oilandgas when he hosted @EllyKaruhanga the godfather of this industry in Uganda.

Hon. Dr. Elly Karuhanga broke down what the #UgandaOilFID means for the regular Ugandan using the simplest language that anyone can understand/1
and without using any technical jargon.

Here is a summary of of what I was able to glean from this his insights and thanks to @Comrade_Otoa for hosting him to share all his experience and knowledge /2
1. First and foremost the question most often asked is how can/will the regular, local Ugandans benefit from the #oilandgas economy.

The answer to this question is simply, whatever you are doing, make sure it meets best practice; the oil and gas sector will not work in / 3

The #GlobalMethanePledge is being launched now at COP26. Result of a massive diplomatic effort by the #EU and the #US, the pledge has now joined over 80 signatories, covering over 2/3 of the global GDP and about 46% of the global #methane emissions. 1/8…
The signatories pledge to cut 30% of global CH4 emissions by 2030, targeting all major emitting sectors #agriculture, #waste, #energy. This is a major step forward & the first time CH4 made it to the top of Global Leaders' priorities list. Many more steps needed looking ahead 2/8
The pledge covers emissions that can be reduced via targeted measures - a lot, but not enough to keep CH4 emissions aligned with 1.5C goal. another 10-15% of reductions must take place via indirect measures incl. #energyefficiency and changes in energy consumption patterns 3/8

THREAD: Polluters (and their trade groups) are running a full fledged misinformation campaign to convince @POTUS and his @EPA to adopt new methane rules that would allow millions of wells to go unregulated. Here’s the scoop:

I observed > formed questions > did research > formed a hypothesis > observed > collected data/evidence
