Once Gautama Maharshi did a severe penance to Brahma in Dandakaranya. Pleased with his penance, Brahma gave him magical seeds, which would bestow him with eternal crop. Gautama Maharshi along with his wife reaches Sapta shringi, and builds

A hermitage there, and with the seeds given by Brahma, sows the seeds which give him crops in a few moments, which makes all other Rishis in the vicinity jealous. After a few days, draught strikes the area, and all crops except Gautama Maharshi's crops get destroyed.

Gautama Maharshi then hosts all the Rishis till the period of draught. Filled with envy, all the Rishis create a Maya Gowmata, with a illusion of her grazing in the field. Seeing the gowmata, Gautama Maharshi happily goes and touches her feet, and tries to feed her. Immediately

The Gowmata falls dead to the ground, as this was the planned illusion of the Rishis. Frightened that he brought Brahma hatya pataka upon himself, Gautama Maharshi starts panicking . All the Rishis then say, to get rid of the sin, he should bring ganga and get it flow through the

Gowmata's body. Gautama then prays for Shiva, and when Shiva appears, he asks for a strand of his hair( Jatha), with Ganga in it. Shiva does so, and when he sprinkles water from the Jatha, the gowmata disappears, and the strand of hair becomes a huge river. THAT RIVER IS GODAVARI

AND IS ALSO CALLED GAUTHAMI, after Gautama Maharshi 🙏 Angered with what The Rishis did, he curses that all the Brahmins would forget all the vedas and will not be eligible for vedic practices. With the intervention of Sapta rishis, Gautama retracts the curse and limits it to

Kaliyuga. Hence is Kaliyuga, vedas are neglected, and most of the Brahmins stopped revering Vedas and the Vedic practices.
GODAVARI, which was born for the purpose of Gowmata, is hence named so. And it is named GAUTAMI after Gautama Maharshi🙏
