Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, who did not attend the COVID-19 news conference today, is live on his Facebook page. I’ll Tweet the highlights.
Kenney says the announcement of the end of the Restriction Exemption Program and other COVID public health measures will be made “early next week.”
"There will likely never be an end to COVID-19," Kenney says. He's making the point that we as a population will become more and more immune over time (as we all get sick). He says it will soon be time to learn to "live with" COVID.
Kenney says he wants to see COVID public health measures affecting children "lifted as soon as possible." He signals youth activity restrictions (sports + school, etc...) will be lifted early in the reopening plan.
An aside: every question the premier has answered so far has been factually incorrect. He is correcting the question-askers.
Example:
Q - you said hospitals were busy. that's wrong.
A - no, it's right. Here are the stats.
Also for the record, I am submitting questions to Premier Kenney on Facebook. Hopefully he takes one!
Q: Can you stop municipalities from implementing their own mandates?
A: Kenney says the Municipal Government Act allows city governments to make their own mandate policies, but "we will take a look at that." He says city govs don't have the same data/knowledge as the province.
Kenney continues, saying it would be troubling if city governments choose to overrule the province's decision to end restrictions.
It will be interesting to see if @JyotiGondek and #yyccc agree with this.
Q: will masking requirements be removed at the same time as the REP?
A: "stay tuned," Kenney says. He says removing mask mandates on children is a priority.
Quick FYI: many of the comments on the premier's Facebook Live are vile.
Kenney says the vaccine requirement for government employees (including AHS employees) will end at the same time as other restrictions.
Kenney is now reading from a Rachel Notley Tweet, which read "The UCP failed to stop the spread of Omicron."
He says that accusation is "unscientific."
To be clear, he wasn't asked about her Tweet.
Q: "Why aren't you in Ottawa helping Albertans take back our country?"
Kenney says he has been consistently advocating against the federal trucker vaccine mandate.
Kenney says he's holding a 10 a.m. news conference tomorrow with other premiers to call for more federal money for healthcare costs.
Kenney is quoting Trump now.
And that wraps it up. Premier Kenney did not take my questions.

In about 15 minutes, we'll hear from Premier Kenney, as well as ministers Copping and Madu, and CMOH Dr. Hinshaw. We're expecting to learn more about why an offer of immediate hospital help from Newfoundland was rejected. Follow along!
Premier Jason Kenney begins, announcing that the Critical Infrastructure Defence Act will be updated to make it illegal to protest in front of hospitals and other health care facilities.
"We understand and respect that Albertans feel the need to protest," Jason Kenney says of anti-vax protesters.
But, he says they can't impede necessary care of patients at health care centres.
Premier Kenney is up now. The government is renewing its State of Public Health Emergency. He said we could run out of staff at ICU beds in 10 days.
“This is a crisis of the unvaccinated,” Kenney says. He is admitting for the first time that COVID is hitting Alberta harder than any other province because of our relatively poor vaccination rate.
And we've started. Kenney begins by calling out the federal government for actions he says don't serve Alberta's interests, including "surrendering to Obama's veto of Keystone XL."
"While the experts and pundits often mock the very idea of trying to change equalization, Albertans do not," Kenney says. He says on the campaign trail in 2019, equalization was one of the major concerns he heard about from voters.
Premier Kenney begins, saying the government has "stepped up in a big way" to support students in schools. He says school boards have had access to an additional $1B in funding for COVID-19 safety.
Kenney says there have been learning disruptions for students throughout the last 15 months.
He is announcing up to $45M in new funding for school authorities for kids in grades 1-3 to help students struggling with literacy and numeracy.
Nenshi says masks will be worn at the Stampede grounds, either all the time or in designated places.
Q from @Tommy_Slick: is it worth the risk to host a Stampede.
A: Nenshi says this would be much easier if the Stampede was in August, but it’s still worth hosting in July.
“What a remarkably odd thing for the Premier to focus in on,” Nenshi says about the Premier telling the public Nenshi would not grant permits for the Stampede parade.
Nenshi says there is a way to do a safe parade and discussions are underway.
