In other Carnatic news, today is the Jayanthi Utsavam of poet, saint and composer Kancharla Gopanna, more popular as Bhaktha Ramadasu.
As a Vaggeyakara, he dedicated a large number of compositions to Lord Rama in Bhadrachalam, or "Dakshina Ayodhya", as it is called.
🤩🙏🤩🙏🤩
I am not going to get into his biography and such details. A lot of it is very well known. Even his musical compositions. They were first popularized by Balantrapu Garu and Dr BMK on the famous Bhakthi Ranjani show of All India Radio. They became a rage!
Before his compositions became popular with the classical music community, they were already a large part of local folk repertoire!
Farmers working in fields would sing his songs. In fact, they popularized them centuries before anyone else!
What I particularly like is the lesser known 'Dasharathi Shatakam'. A hundred beautiful verses in praise of Lord Rama of Bhadrachalam. Telugu literary lovers will know of it. Outside many are less aware.
Each verse ends with "Bhadragiri Dasharathi Karunapayonidhi"
🤩🙏🤩🙏🤩
If you find the Telugu of Ramadasu simple and conversational in most of his compositions, it is a different facet in this Shatakam. The usage of words, the closeness to Sanskrit and his imagination are phenomenal in this Shatakam.
Earlier we'd be made to byheart several verses!
I can probably recall only about two dozen from memory.
But there was a time when a whole generations of kids knew this Shatakam, alongside Vemana, Kalahastishwara and Sumathi Shatakams, byheart! Guess that is long gone!
Wish kids are taught this in schools!
🤩🙏🤩🙏🤩
There is a wonderful lecture series by the famous Brahmasri Chaganti Koteshwara Rao garu on the Dasharathi Shatakam. He tells in a language easy to understand for everyone. Do listen. 🙏🤩🙏🤩🙏
Want to write and say so many more things but maybe for another time!
The Jayanthi Utsavams are being livestreamed from Bhadrachalam. You can watch them here.
🙏🤩🙏🤩🙏

Something extraordinary is happening in Hyderabad. A giant statue of Saint Shri Ramanujacharya who propounded the Visishtadvaita philosophy has been set up. Today the Prime Minister of India, Shri @narendramodi ji will do Lokaarpanam.
A short thread on what it might signify. 🙏
The statue and complex around it looks damn impressive! It has miniature shrines to all the Divyadesams. Veda Patashalas, Yagashalas, Gaushalas and so forth.
Certainly a huge huge commendable feat achieved!
🙏😀🙏😀
I am not going into the biographical details of the Saint. They are well known and readily available. What is more important is Telugus reclaiming him. Yes, he was of Telugu ancestry in his Poorvashramam. His Inti peru was Aasuri. His father was Keshava Somayajulu. 🙏😀
The entire classical dance community is in a state of shock with the recent Padma awards! And the @MinOfCultureGoI, @kishanreddybjp@KishanReddyOfc, @M_Lekhi have much to answer, some uncomfortable questions from a community that was neglected the last seven years.
A thread.
The recent awardees in dance were sisters Nalini and Kamlini for Kathak. Padmaja reddy for Kuchipudi.
While those Kathak sisters are old members of the Sangh and hence not too difficult to get with in-house recommendations, the Kuchipudi candidate surprised many.
Padmaja Reddy, a rich and influential socialite, but a highly mediocre dancer, from Hyderabad is the daughter in law of a Telangana minister. She has at times used names of popular Gurus and said she was their student. She was briefly a student of Shobha Naidu.
My beloved Guru Garu, Pouranika Sarvabhouma, Pravachana Chakravarthy, Veda Brahmasri Malladi Chandrashekhara Sastry Garu makes his final exit on this auspicious day! At 5.15 PM. There will never be another like him!
न भूतो न भविष्यति!
Atma Shanti 🙏
In his long and illustrious lifetime of 97 years, Sastry Garu has done over a lakh Saptahams of Srimad Bhagawatam, Srimad Valmiki Ramayanam and Mahabharatam. In addition to others like Srinivasa Kalyanam etc. He was an authority on the Vedas, Puranas and Upanishads!
🙏🙏🙏
Like Bheeshma Pitamaha, he observed Vaikuntha Ekadasi yesterday, and exited today. He lived a full life! So inspiring!
The heavens must be ringing with his voice!
His Pravachanams are available for all of us to listen and learn!
