1/ Two things of note here:

1) He says Spotify should have rules and should take action when rules are broken. Next sentence says doesn’t believe in cancelling

2) @Spotify says it was Rogan and not them that took down the 110 episodes. News reports should be updated. No credit

2/ I’ve done a lot of this type of work over the years. Thing is, the whole cancelling thing is a straw man argument. Ironically, deplatforming would be a lot rarer if platforms had rules and enforced enforced regularly. That’s how you create a norm.

3/ Spotify/Rogan issue is important. But, I can’t help wonder where the public and music industry has been all the years re right-wing talk radio.

Talk radio is a cesspool of deceit, extremism and bigotry. The audience far eclipses Rogan’s. But little pushback there.

4/ I’m not griping. But part of the problem contributing to this is that we have allowed and enabled an industry to exist for decades that is solely designed to commercial extremism, lies and bigotry.

You think Rogan contract is big? Limbaugh’s was $400 million.

5/ My point is not to diminish the Spotify/Rogan issue. But to put in context. It’s been sorely long overdue. But the industry could have acted way sooner. And had they, Rogan’s model would have never been seen as commercially valuable as it so clearly seems to be to Spotify.

6/ tldr: 1) this has been a long time coming: 2) More enforcement and consistent enforcement leads to less “cancelling” not more because it has a normative building effect; and, 3) Spotify is wildly misjudging and mishandling this, desperate not to inflame right-wingers.
