On "legitimate political discourse"

Rep. Adam Kinzinger tells @Morning_Joe that the RNC's censure and depiction of Jan. 6 is "a defining moment" for the Republican Party. He responds to Kevin McCarthy: "He is the weakest leader that has ever, frankly, existed in that position."
Kinzinger says RNC members didn't oppose the resolution bc they're "scared to death of the mob."

"RNC deserves every aspect of backlash that's going to come down on it. And this is a defining moment in American politics...Are you for authoritarianism? Are you against democracy?"
Rep. @AdamKinzinger says he doesn't take the RNC resolution personally: "I don't get the hurt feelings that Donald Trump gets on daily basis."

"Donald Trump literally just admitted to a coup attempt, and you're gonna turn your fire on Liz and Adam?"

"This is an insane moment."
Kinzinger discusses why "normal" Republicans stay quiet on Trump and Jan. 6:

Some tell him they need to win their primary or they'll be replaced by a "really bad" member.

Others tell him they don't want to get in a "Twitter war" and ask him not to tell them how to do their job.

New —> Manchin says Build Back Better is 'dead.' Here's what he might resurrect.

The WV Democrat talks in detail about what policies he’s willing to support.

His priority? “Fix the tax code.”

“It's the reason we have reconciliation.”

w/ @BenjySarlin:

Every morning around 830a, Manchin gets a text from a staffer on what the national debt is (photo below).

Dems have discussed putting a chunk of revenues/savings to deficit reduction as an enticement.

I asked him about that.

“That’s music to my ears.”

nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
Tax policies Joe Manchin told me he still supports in reconciliation:

• Corporate tax rate 🔼 25%
• Minimum corporate tax 15%
• Capital gains tax 🔼 28% “all in”
• End loopholes like carried interest
• Higher individual taxes for wealthy

New: Republicans split on how to approach a Supreme Court vacancy

Three strategies have emerged 👇

Lean in early and attack (Cruz, Wicker)

Keep the door open (Collins, Graham)

Critique or pressure Biden but don’t say no yet (Cornyn, Rounds, McConnell)

nbcnews.com/politics/supre…
.@LindseyGrahamSC is pushing hard for one of Biden’s Supreme Court prospects. “Michelle Childs is awesome… She's incredibly well-qualified.” He tells me he’d be “very inclined” to vote for her and predicts “a handful” of GOP votes if she’s the nominee. nbcnews.com/politics/supre…
.@SenWhitehouse says he doubts Mitch McConnell and GOP leaders want to start a “war” over SCOTUS vacancy after they “captured” the Court 6-3. “Once you've got the burglar successfully in the house, you don't necessarily want to cause a lot of attention.” nbcnews.com/politics/supre…

LATEST: Democrats' voting rights legislation nears defeat amid Senate GOP blockade

w/ @RebeccaShabad @frankthorp @JulieNBCNews: nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
The Senate is voting NOW on whether to break a filibuster and end debate on the Freedom To Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

This requires 60 to succeed. (It won't succeed.)
As expected, Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema vote YES to end debate and advance the voting bills.

Manchin laments the state of the Senate today: "I don't know what happened to the good old days. But I can tell you they're not here now."
Joe Manchin says he's proud to cosponsor the Freedom To Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, but he — again — emphasizes his opposition to weakening the current 60-vote threshold.
"I have not — and will never — waver on this."

Manchin contends that slashing the 60-vote rule would pour "fuel on the fire of political whiplash and dysfunction that is tearing our nation apart."

.@POTUS: "Some people may call what's happening right now the new normal. I call it a job not yet finished. It will get better. We're moving toward a time when Covid-19 won't disrupt our daily lives."

"We're not there yet. But we will get there." Image
Biden touts BBB, which is on ice due to Manchin's resistance to the House-passed version.

"My Build Back Better plan will address the biggest costs working families face every day."

He says it'll cut child care costs, prescription drugs, ease long-term inflationary pressures.
Biden on his first year and various stalled goals, including BBB and voting rights legislation: "I didn't over-promise. I have probably outperformed what anybody thought would happen."

New —> Senate nears filibuster clash over voting rights as Democrats brace for failure

Freedom To Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act come up for “debate” this week.

But Democrats don’t have the votes to overcome or nuke the filibuster. nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
Scooplet: NAACP president @DerrickNAACP sends a new letter to all U.S. senators before the chamber begins debate on voting and election legislation.

"Senators, our democracy may be standing in its final hour," he writes.

nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
Chuck Schumer is on the floor saying Democrats are under “no illusion” about their “difficult” odds on voting and election legislation. But he says “the public deserves to see” where every senator stands re: doing what’s necessary to pass them.
