It's been 1 month since I joined @iearnfinance and in this time I've got some people asking me:

What is it like joining a DAO?
What is it like working at Yearn?

I feel like I can write some initial thoughts on this!

What are DAOs: my experience in $YFI DAO

Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAO) are

👉 Organization: means it's more than 1 person

👉 Autonomous: means it doesn't depend on external organizations

👉 Decentralized: means that it opts for using tools that decentralizes power

DAOs often decentralize decision-making to community token-holders.

The one I joined and will 🧵 about is @iearnfinance which is "a radical experiment in decentralization" 💙

I joined $YFI because I was tired of how companies that aren't DAOs function: The venture capital model ate the path for tech companies to grow products properly and rarely reward all workers with their fair share of what is being built

So I wanted to try out a new model: DAO

I saw the pinned post from $YFI and I liked it:

Then I read the blue pill (thebluepill.eth.limo) and loved it!

I've applied through their website form and also to some other DAOs (that never answered back haha), about a week later Yearn contacted me!

So I had a call with a Yearn onboarder who helped me send my past work about tech writing to the team that needed this role, they liked it!

I was talking to other opportunities but none of them were DAOs and I didn't want to go back to the VC world and dropped them all

How to start? I wanted to write for marketing and most of the public contribution material was for development. So I started by asking my onboarder how to tackle marketing issues, and in parallel, I started fixing some document-infrastructure related issues that I found on Github

I got in contact with Yearn marketing people, and they helped me get in contact with "What we can start writing about?" and "Who can help me with the tech?"

All interaction is done via Telegram!

So this was a great month where I

👉 Wrote a lot about crypto that I think Twitter liked most of it from the engagement I got back

👉 Was able to work together with like 10 different people in initiatives for marketing, devdocs, and more!

all without yearn interviewing me!

So in the end of the month I got my compensation through Coordinape: medium.com/iearn/decentra…

To be put into coordinape you need vouching from 3 members: onboarder + 2

In the end of the month each contributor distribute tokens to all people that opt-in receiving compensation

Besides coordinape, for full-time roles the onboarder can help contact the yearn budget team for a stable compensation: this will require proof-of-work before doing it!

So I've talked about how I joined and how compensation works. There are documents on how some operational things work that you might want to check like "What to do when people disagree when there is no manager?" and "Who decides about what?"

At its core, $YFI is a group of people that want the protocol to succeed, and most of the problems the system needs to solve (like salary or mgmt) can use past resources to build upon

The magic part about it is how freedom-oriented the relationship of worker<->system is

This freedom comes in many ways!

I can contribute wherever I want without assigning myself a role and get compensated accordingly, this is really hard to find!

And it feels great that I was able to drop a formal job and do all this only using crypto 😻
