While watching #TedLasso, American wife asks me, her usual cultural translator for all things British, questions like "what exactly is offside" and "how long do relegated teams have to stay in the lower league"

I got nothing cos I've never been into soccer. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️ We google it.
I'm like, listen, you wanna know about Ranji Trophy relegation and front foot no ball rules? I'm your guy. But the British Soccer League, I'm as American about as you are. All I know is relegation puts a penalty on continuing to New York Jets your way through seasons lol.
So in recent years, the Jets have been the villain in a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode and also been insulted on Ted Lasso and I find it absolutely hilarious.
Here is a sample of a conversation while we pause the show & confer

"So is Manchester City here supposed to be based on Manchester United?"

"I'm pretty sure it's a different real club."

"And are they the champions? I thought Man Utd were always champions!"

"How do I know??"
"Well you always know the randomest shit about British things! 🤣"

"Soccer is one British exception to that. Okay, it seems like Man City are indeed champs."

"Manchester has 2 champion teams...how many does London have?"

"Dozens, it feels like. I don't know any of this!"
"Wait, Crystal Palace is a real team name? Lol! Sounds like a high end strip club. 🤣🤣🤣"

"You're not gonna believe this. "Pep" isn't a made up name either! He's the actual coach of Manchester."

"Which Manchester?"

"Whichever"

"Soccer is funny!"
This could be a TikTok meme. Americans posting their conversations discussing soccer things during #TedLasso 🤣🤣
I mean we watch a league with a guy named Haha Clinton Dix and a team named *cringe* The Patriots so maybe glass houses and all that.

Here are the objective facts

- like anywhere else in the world, the college was okay with Muslim women students wearing hijab or niqab since forever. Cos why not, right? How does it affect you or me if the student next to me shows me their hair or not?

- but sanghis 😤😤

Priyanka Gandhi makes a principled statement that emphatically underlines a woman's right over her body. In the context of hijab, burqa.

Pai's brain jumps, of all possible places, to women clamoring to attend college in bikinis as a crisis. I pity the women in his life.
Notice that nowhere did Priyanka ever say anything about college. But it shows the bent of this man's brain that it instantly went to picturing young women attending colleges in bikinis and wanting that to be implemented. Leaning into creepiness in this #metoo era.
The more these Pai Nilekani etc tweet politics, the more I understand why the most rabid fascist ideas repurposed from 20th century Europeans end up as forwards that originate from the Infosys benches.

Dad turns seventy soon. He's healthy, happily retired, bingeing TV shows on streaming, cooking everyday, learning new songs on harmonioum, and taught himself to read and write Urdu during the pandemic. And gets to hang out with his first grandson. Nice to see him finally relax.
Growing up, I saw dad as someone who was always working working working or then stressed by work and for some reason thought him a workaholic. And thought he'd struggle with retirement.

Dude took to retirement like an albatross to the open skies! Just gliding in leisure!
It's not that he was a workaholic. It's that he worked in an economy, an industry, a system so absolutely fucked up that nothing less than giving his all to his job could ensure a good living for his family.

And once his kids were set for life, he kicked back and chilled out.

That "strictly" before the vegetarian means who else can it be but a sanghi? BTW such a posting violates NYC housing discrimination statutes. As many sanghis have found out in the past. Not all countries let you impose your bigotry on someone else's lifestyle.
NYC law, US law forbids even the landlords themselves from dictating what tenants can and cannot eat. But random desi sanghi types feel they can dictate what their roommates can and cannot eat by just making a post online. Brahminical arrogance usually.
Lemme elaborate. It is perfectly okay & legal to post "I'm a strict vegetarian guest hater looking for fellow minded roommates so we can rent a house together". That's okay.
But if you already have a lease, you can't make their diet a condition for adding them to the lease.

I do. Very much. Anyone with an entry level programming course can create a Wordle. It is the sharing that is THE point of Wordle's appeal. Cos it's a nice thing we all share worldwide, that same word. And the squares let us compare how we did, and try to guess others' guesses.🤓
Note to self: Next time I give students a coding assignment at the start of a course to gauge their programming skill level, just say "Make Wordle".
Speaking of which, some people are really overthinking and overanalyzing the daily Wordle word. There is no analysis to be done there. It is one dude picking a word that is generally commonly known. There is no algorithmic AI inside Josh's head. 🤣🤣

There is nothing to *debate* about a hijab FFS!
It's hijab diktats like Saudi/Iran that are wrong & must be opposed.

Why does a woman choosing to cover her hair pose such a danger to society? Don't nuns do the same? And many communities with ghunghat? And orthodox Jewish women?
Don't ignore the gaslighting they are engaging in by treating hijab, a very harmless commonplace mundane thing, as synonymous with burqa/niqab, an admittedly more complex concept. But even there, the debate is best left to Muslim women. All we should contribute is empathy.
Also, the India of my childhood didn't treat every woman in a burqa as someone who was automatically oppressed, had no agency, and was forced into wearing it. I think that prejudice escalated after Taliban took over. But I'm remembering Muslim neighbors and family friends.
