Police shut down the Conferderation Park Protest Camp, that was 500 m from Parliament. This new camp is by former Communications Security Establishment HQ. This pushes the perimeter out of the core- but is closer to main road to Ottawa Int Airport.
It would appear this new protest camp that’s being built was permitted by Ottawa Police. Councillors aren’t happy.
Why would police permit this? 1500 Bronson- is close to the primary access road to the Ottawa Intl Airport. It is within walking distance of Carleton University. In- person classes resume Monday. It’s also near Brewer Park.
Real question: how many protest camps are there? Please add.
This isn’t a downtown problem anymore.

2) Coventry Rd RCTG Stadium
3) 1500 Bronson near Carleton
4) Embrun
5) Gatineau

My latest: How organizers with police and military expertise are helping convoy protestors dig in.
cbc.ca/news/canada/co…
Within the leadership group, there are two individuals that stand out that would have deep knowledge Ottawa's security strengths and weaknesses. One was on the Prime Minister's security detail, the other sat on Canada's national counter-terrorism unit.
There are also former police officers and soldiers who joined the convoy demonstration. The website Police on Guard lists at least 150 ex-police and 50 ex-Cdn forces who are against vaccine mandates. Video on the site shows members at the protest. policeonguard.ca/police-on-guar…

My latest report: Why do truck convoy protestors seem one step ahead of police?
The first tactical error made in this protest was to allow big rigs downtown. You can remove protestors with police but not trucks. Now towing companies are refusing to help via @jchianello

cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…
I also wrote this about the internal tensions within the Ottawa Police Service that may be clouding response.

For me, there's something unsettling about the sight of a Black police chief being undone by a group of predominantly white men flouting laws.
A long thread on the tensions within the OPS that may shed light on what action is and isn't being taken.
Peter Sloly was hired as Chief in 2019. There were high hopes he would help heal the deep racial divide that took place between OPS and the Black community following the 2016 fatal arrest of Somali-Cdn Abdirahman Abdi. "Judge me by my actions" -Sloly said.
cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…
Sloly was coming into an OPS force where many white male officers were feeling they were passed over because of efforts to hire and promote people of colour and women. Here's my report on the leaked diversity census

For the past few days the parking lot next to the RCTG stadium used by the Titans baseball team on Coventry Rd has been turned into a camp site for Freedom Convoy protestors. They have no @ottawacity permit and were not granted permission for overnight stay. (More)
Here is official response from City officials on the use of the RCTG stadium lot. Police used the lot to alleviate traffic. It’s now been turned into an illegal campsite. Some truckers are sleeping in their cans. Others rented hotel rooms

People with these views are emboldened. In the summer of 2020- anti-mask, racist conspiracy theorists- espousing similar views set up camp at the War Memorial for 3 months!! No wonder some felt they could park there this time. (cont)

In the summer of 2020 - so called “patriots” broadcast their views daily for more than THREE months encumbered at the War Memorial.
They went to PMO to “arrest”Justin Trudeau. Media didn’t pay attention until they
harassed Jagmeet Singh and a journalist. cbc.ca/amp/1.5748300
We (legacy media) have ignored these right wing conspiracy theorists because we didn’t want to legitimize their views or we considered them outliers. In the meantime the groups gained support and followers . See thread below on one of Freedom Convoy leaders
