So I had the realist conversation with my 9yo about the n-word so far just now.
I guess a black friend at school said that another black person called him the word (not at school) and the friend was confused, as was my kid. Who also didn't know why it's such a "bad" word anyway.
So, I explained that any word can be turned into a slur if you say it often enough, about one group of people, with enough hate in your heart. I then started calling people "stupid SPOONS." "I'm going to to STEAL your Pokemon cards, you dumb ugly SPOON"
I explained that after a while, the word "spoon" would hurt you even without the other words, and that the n-word was the word white people have chosen to use against us for hundreds of years.
I said, to fight back, some black people have tried to take the word back...
"Hi, my beautiful, smart Spoon." That if we can make Spoon a term of endearment maybe white people will stop using it as a slur.
BUT, I said that personally his mom and I don't think it works and that's why he never hears it around the house.
I said that we'd rather always rather not even risk using the word, even though we can, because you never know how somebody else will take it, and that I never want to make white people think they can say it to me.
I said that the real problem with the n-word is not that the word itself is powerful, but that the white people using it *think* they have power, and are *trying* to hurt your feelings. And that's what makes it feel so bad. That they wish you to feel bad.
Finally, I said that white people have invented hurtful words for *all* kinds of people, and sometimes people try to invent hurtful words to say back to white people. But that in our family we try to avoid all of them.
So, I dunno, best I could do kind of caught off guard after getting off air and getting my daily download (I ask him "what did you learn today?" every day and often it's, like, trivia and not, you know, racism). He seemed to understand the general points.
But I kinda knew this convo was coming. B/c while we've done a lot of "n-word bad" stuff, We really don't say it and we don't listen to music that says it (in front of him) so he's never really heard it in solidarity, and I knew that would be confusing.

People need to stop saying that conservatives on the court are "like" Jim Crow. We are beyond that now. Now the Court is just DOING what the Court DID in the Jim Crow era.

It's just... the same. All that's missing is the violent vigilante enforcement of those rulings.
Like, understand, some states, some of the time, are always going to try to be racist when it comes to voting. Apartheid is in the very DNA of the "state's rights" argument.
The ONLY question is whether the Federal Government will stop them.
The Supreme Court doesn't have to *do* the racism. It just has to let the racism happen by pretending the 14th and 15th Amendment don't exist. That's what it did ever day from 1877 to 1954. That's what's it's done every day since 2013.

Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, Barrett, and alleged attempted rapist Brett Kavanaugh vote to let Alabama use it's racist maps, finding (wrongly) that it's too close to the election do anything about racism.

cnn.com/2022/02/07/pol…
It's not a surprise, given who we've allowed to be on the Court. But it is another reminded that the pro-racism wing of the conservative movement is ascendant and will not let the 14th or 15th amendments operate, just like these people did from 1868-->1965
It'd be nice if Senate Democrats could cobble together 50 votes against Jim Crow, but I know that the donors who control Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema are offended on behalf of Mitt Romney when I call Republican policies what they are.

Good faith? Good faith?? What in the hell do you know about operating in good faith? LET'S LOOK AT THE RECIEPTS
Here's @ishapiro on Sotomayor: "In picking Sotomayor President Obama has confirmed that identity politics matter to him more than merit"
WAS THAT OFFERED IN GOOD FAITH?
Oh, your historic demeaning of women of color up for the Supreme Court is old news? Fine, let's look at @ishapiro on first Black Attorney General Eric Holder:
"Attorney General Eric Holder.. is “like a modern-day George Wallace,”
GOOD FAITH?
archive.thinkprogress.org/top-conservati…
Nah. You don't operate in good faith. You operate in dog whistle racism that you count on your white colleagues to either not acknowledge or secretly applaud. You think yourself a "truth teller" merely because you are willing to say racist things aloud.

This statement from the @GeorgetownLaw Dean is BS and I will tell you why.

If you are a law school that is trying to build a culture of equality and inclusion you DON'T hire Ilya Shapiro.

Dean Treanor wants you to think "the tweets" are damaging, not the DUDE WHO WROTE THEM
In fact, everybody who knows the dude who wrote them knows that this is how the dude who wrote them thinks. INCLUDING GEORGETOWN. He's said THIS EXACT CRAP about women of color before. IT'S HIS GODDAMN BRAND.

To DEFEND Ilya a bit, he has not hidden this about himself.
NOBODY who hires or is even vaguely familiar with him can be surprised by his tweets. So just cut the crap, Dean Treanor. You hired him, you know EXACTLY what you were getting.

What you thought, what *everybody involved* in the hire thought, was that he'd hide it better.

Also... with Supreme Court audio open to all now, hasn't it really been obvious to people listening in good faith that Kagan, Sotomayor, AND BARRETT consistently ask *the best* questions while the dudes just make speeches or engage in hypothetical pontification.
Like, can we just be HONEST about that? Like, I hate everything that ACB stands for, but when she's got the mic I listen carefully cause she's gonna do a thing.

When Kavanaugh has the mic I listen carefully because his about to say some dumbassery I can dunk on.
Question format for each justice:

Roberts: Isn't it true that all these problems have been solved already?
Thomas: Why should the federal government exist?
Alito: Question? Fuck You is my question.
Breyer: Can you help me out of this hypothetical I've lost myself in?
