I jumped back into Elite Dangerous (I played it a little back around its release date) and... wow the on-ramp to that game is just not great
like... game confusing me about whether I needed to buy an expansion to land on planets (you don't, but you used to, so the game says that you do)
most of the activities you can get up to in the little enclosed starter area are curtailed by not being able to buy adequate equipment
like you can't get a kinetic weapon with a gimbal mount so if you're looking for combat I hope you like aiming your ship's nose to fire your cannon
you can't get a hyperdrive wake scanner so if the target of your bounty runs away you're SOL
you can't get a power plant powerful enough to run mining equipment without overloading and shutting down your ship's systems
the game will give you missions to do these things, at this point, on the understanding that it's your way to build up to leaving the tutorial zone
