Can we always be connected?

A thread #4 🧵 inspired by a book 📚 “The Culture Code” by @DanielCoyle

“Culture is a set of living relationships working toward a shared goal. It’s not something you are. It’s something you do.”

"The Culture Code" provides great insights into how successful teams are created, shares ideas distilled from scientific research and close examination of many successful groups: sport, navy, comedians, jewellery thieves or modern software companies, eg. Google, Pixar,IDEO.
2/11
This book explains that there is no mystery behind great teams, but it’s rather a process that can be understood and controlled. It shows also that building a cohesive team requires a constant and conscious effort; a team is not built at once and once only.
3/11
There are 3 fundamental areas explored:
1) Building for safety - how signals of connections create bonds of belonging and identity;
2) Sharing vulnerability - as a basic mechanism to create trusting collaboration;
3) Establishing a purpose to create shared goals and values;
4/11
Two years ago I would read this book, nod in agreement and start implementing more interesting points.
But now, after the pandemic forced us to change the way we work, connect and communicate, I’m thinking how some of the ideas can be translated to the new virtual reality?
5/11
To create connections and establish belonging, humans use the same primitive part of the brain that is responsible for recognising threats. This unconscious brain constantly validates “belonging cues”, and tells us if we are safe and connected to those around us.
6/11
Interestingly "belonging cues" are behaviours that best can be emitted and detected when people are physically present: i.a. proximity, eye contact, energy, mimicry, turn-taking, attention, body language, vocal pitch, and if everyone talking to everyone else in the group.
7/11
Knowing how heavily we rely on our unconscious brains and primitive communication channels to establish that we are safe, I’m pondering how it translates to a virtual world? How are we able to bond when a team works remotely only? Is the belonging foundation strong enough?
8/11
What makes things harder is that belonging cues can't be communicated once and forgotten. We need a constant flow of connections signalling ensuring that we are safe.
“This is why a sense of belonging is easy to destroy and hard to build”.
9/11
A few learnings:
#1 There are certain micro-behaviours that can build connections and create a bond of belonging among people.
#2 Even established teams need to re-confirm and reinforce over and over that they are safe together and they are connected.
10/11
#3 Safety is absolutely fundamental for building a high performing team, but cannot be created by words as it’s not managed by the rational part of the brain.
To build a team we must first create a strong foundation of safety by using much more primitive mechanisms.
11/11
Questions - would be great if you can comment:
What are behaviours that help you to feel safe in a virtual team?
What are behaviours that caused you to feel unsafe?
Have you built a high-performing team from scratch without any physical interactions? Any learnings?
