Compared to most of Curtis' films it's a hard slog (excuse the bad pun) to get through. Sort of the Heaven's Gate Extended "Holy Fuck Is This Long" Directors Cut of his Power of Nightmares. Same message: People prefer living in dreams over trying to figure out reality.
one of the best Adam Curtis docs is one that takes the piss out of Adam Curtis.
If you watch Heavens Gate on fast forward it actually makes sense. But this film assumes you don't get distracted or have anything else to do for an entire day. Lots of good stuff BUT Adam.... editing....its a thing. The average attention span these days is.... 8 seconds.
If you are looking for the Libertarian "big think eats shit" modality in films Curtis never disappoints. I haven't found a copy of "Trumpets and Typewriters: A History of War Reporting" but if you get bored watching all 80,000 hours of his work you can play Adam Curtis Bingo.
A good one is Bitter Lake, a more focused story on America's early links to Afghanistan.
I am all Adam Curtised out. Some interesting stuff. Lots of discordant imagery and hippie music. Funniest scene is Russian reactions to a giant Putin portrait in an elevators. His premise of powerless nations and powerless people doing rando things is overly broad. But yes chaos.
