This thread: Yuzuru Hanyu post-competition press conference (starting at 5:30pm local time) #Beijing2022
Moderator: We are holding this press conference because we have received many requests and we don’t have the time to hold all the individual interviews #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I am very surprised that so many people have gathered today - thanks for the opportunity to speak to you all. The Olympics are held in the closed loop - social distancing is very difficult in the mixed zone, so I wanted to do this press conference here #Beijing2022
Hanyu: In my short, my skate got caught in the ice, and I was very disappointed. It was great ice - easy to skate on and jump on. I loved the skating rink #Beijing2022
Hanyu: Of course I thought about a lot of things - I took on the 4A challenge but I couldn’t land it. I thought about the effort and the journey to the Olympics, and the value of the hard work and results. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: My ankle really hurts - I was told I shouldn’t have jumped as much today during the practice. I took a lot of painkillers. I want to skate here, so that’s why I practiced today. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: These few days, I thought a lot of about the Olympics, and during that time, I realized that I’ve been supported by so many people. I received a lot of care on my ankle - it even hurts to walk, but I’m receiving a lot of treatment #Beijing2022
Hanyu: At the end of my performance, it wasn’t sad. I got a huge round of applause and I was very grateful for it. I knew there were so many people supporting me from all over the world - I want to share my gratitude. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I thanked the ice, and it was the last time I was performing on this rink. Even though there were hard times, I really loved skating here, so I wanted to thank the ice. #Beijing2022
Hanyu [on continuing the 4A]: I haven’t got an answer to it yet. I don’t want it to sound like an excuse - day before, I sprained my ankle in my 4A. If it were a normal comp, would’ve WD. Docs said I should stay off my feet for the next 10 days - injury’s pretty bad. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: On the day of the FS, my leg hurt so much, I didn’t know what I was going to do. I got an injection right before the FS and I decided I would skate.#Beijing2022
Hanyu: That FS 4A was the best one I’ve done so far. I studied a lot to do the 4A, and I tried to use that info to do it. I want to be the best when it comes to jumping - I want people to think my jumps are beautiful; I wanted to jump high and that’s what I did. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I think it was the best 4A I could’ve done, it was underrotated but I’m happy with it #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I’m not supposed to be skating right now but I wanted to skate really badly, so that’s what I practiced today. I thought - I like my figure skating - that’s how I felt during practice today #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I am going through a range of emotions - I practiced today and wanted to jump so badly. I want to treasure how the ice feels and skate. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I didn’t hear as many congratulations this time around but a lot of people said it was good, so I was very happy. A part of me is skating for others, a part of me is skating for myself. I’m committed to figure skating while experiencing a lot of emotions #Beijing2022
Hanyu [on the great Eastern earthquake]: If my performances can bring people together, it makes me very happy. If my performances can contribute to something greater and more positive, that would make me happy. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I don’t think there’s anything special about me. Everyone takes on challenges everyday - that’s what life is about. In my case, it was the 4A & the oly. I get a lot of praise for taking challenges, but you should congratulate yourself for your own challenges #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I’m v satisfied with my SP - I popped my opening jump and the ice didn’t quite like me that day. I didn’t fall, but it happens more for me - mistakes in the SP. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: In the FS, the mistake on the 4S was unfortunate and I wanted to land the 4A, but the story I wanted to tell - Heaven and Earth - the program I performed fit what I wanted to that day. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I wanted to land the 4A because the 9yr old me wants me to do the 4A. It’s why I have tried it. The one I did in the FS - the 9yr old me congratulated me. I was jumping together w my 9yr old self. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: When I was training the 4A, the final technique of my axel was the technique I used when I was a 9yr old - I felt that this was the axel of Yuzuru Hanyu. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I don’t know what my motivation will be going forward. Even though it was underrotated and I fell, I can say that Yuzuru Hanyu’s 4A was high and beautiful, and I’m proud of it #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I don’t know if these will be my last Olympics. I feel the Olympics are so special - I had an injury, but I could get back on my feet and take on this challenge. It’s the only stage where a skater can do that. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: Feelings-wise, I would love to skate again at an Olympics. Performing in this atmosphere makes me so happy - I’m really fortunate as a skater. I’m so glad and lucky that I’m Yuzuru Hanyu #Beijing2022
Hanyu: My goal - I still want to land the 4A. At the same time, I want to perfect my program. I have this feeling that maybe I have perfected *my* axel. When it comes to my skating going forward, what I want to show everyone - that’s what I think about right now. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I don’t even know where the next Olympics will bit, so I’m not sure. But as Yuzuru Hanyu, I’m going to cherish figure skating which Yuzuru Hanyu loves - I’ll continue to strive to master this sport #Beijing2022
Hanyu: It was a burden [to defend my title] but through the burden, I was totally able to commit to the 4A. If I didn’t win in Sochi, I wouldn’t be in the news this much. It was the gold in Sochi that got me this support. #Beijing2022
Hanyu: I have done more programs since then, and people thought, wow Yuzuru is good and I want to support him. Of course, I can’t win 3 consecutive Olympics. #Beijing2022
[Edited from previous, which was from the interpreter at the press conference] Hanyu: I have said this before: I am an Olympic champion - I have 2 consecutive gold medals, I’m very proud of it. I have 2 consecutive gold medals, and I will live my life proud of it. #Beijing2022

Meanwhile, in between pairs practice and the pairs competition, there’s gala practice (!!) - Nathan Chen, Boyang Jin, and Vincent Zhou #Beijing2022
Boyang Jin skating to Westlife’s cover of Sarah McLachlan’s Angel for the exhibition. I thought I was in an ASPCA commercial with sad dogs. #Beijing2022
No music runthrus here but I’m pretty sure I just saw Caravan choreography #Beijing2022

Trusova: I did do 5 quads - it took me a long long time to achieve this, so I'm really happy with my performance. #Beijing2022
Trusova [about her comments earlier]: For the past 3yrs, I haven't won anything - any important competitions. I was trying to explain this - I was trying to achieve lofty goals, and have more quads. When I did it, I thought I would win. That's how it is #Beijing2022
Chen: I’m so proud of the US for having two medalists now. This competition was awesome. It’s always great to compete in Japan and to compete in front of a sold-out crowd. It’s great for the sport #WorldFigure
