Breaking : CBC sources say Peter Sloly has resigned as Ottawa’s Police Chief and will publicly announce he is stepping aside after the Ottawa Police Services Board meeting today
This comes after 18 days of fractious relations within the chain of command.
Peter Sloly removed three incident commanders - who are experienced in handling massive events like Csnada Day- from handling the response to the Freedom Convoy protest.
Tensions between Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloly and rank and file have percolated for from nearly the start of his tenure in Ottawa. A meme was circulated among members comparing him to Hitler in 2020. The video was condemned as “hateful” cbc.ca/amp/1.5732002
Here is CBC breaking news file on Ottawa’s Chief of Police resigning cbc.ca/news/politics/…
There are two deputy police chiefs who could step in. Deputy Chief Steve Bell or acting Deputy Chief Trish Ferguson.
Ottawa’s other DC Uday Jaswal has been suspended with pay since March 2020 - waiting a hearing on allegations of sexual harassment /misconduct.
This is not to dismiss criticism of Sloly within his own force.
Past and present senior officers who work with him say his management style can be “tyrannical” and “irrational” He removes officers from roles without giving them a reason.
Sloly was hired from outside - he’s a former Deputy Chief of Toronto Police. He had few allies within Ottawa Police. But he was welcomed by community groups as someone who could help rebuild race relations in the city after the death of Abdirahman Abdi during an arrest.
All this to say - it’s complicated. And these factors should be taken into account.
Sources say while Peter Sloly wanted his offcrs to intercept fuel/jerrycans - OPP Command refused to follow through on what they considered an insignificant charge that would cause administrative headache. After that OPS officers refused to intercept too.
Watch this today: Peter Sloly was hired to mend race relations, but that didn't happen. Listen to @DiasporaOttawa Vanessa Dorimain on the reax following Sloly's resignatio with @Ginella_Mcbc.ca/player/play/20…

As police escalate their numbers in the downtown- they so far don’t have a presence at the supply camp on Coventry Rd- near the baseball stadium. There are families with children staying at this site. Thread on what’s there…
There are several large tents. One houses a large dining space equipped with half a dozen bbqs. There are volunteer cooks
Two saunas right now. Temperatures have dipped to -30 C at start of the occupation more than three weeks ago.
Ottawa Police weren’t allowed inside the Coventry logistics central camp to hand out warning flyers about imminent arrests if protestors don’t leave. Here’s how it went down around 2pm.
“This is not illegitimate”
I was invited in by some protesters and asked if I wanted lunch and coffee. Fajitas were on the menu. Protesters didn’t seem worried about the police warnings
I saw approximately 100 people at the camp today. There were children there. The Children’s Aid Society in a news release urged protesters to find alternate care for their children should they be arrested.
This is Ken Labrosse. He led a 6km long convoy of vehicles from Sudbury to Ottawa. He’s been here since the start of the occupation. Labrosse says he does not recognize the legitimacy of the warning flyers Ottawa Police handed out.
Ken Labrosse who led the convoy from Sudbury, has been here from the start and doesn’t plan to leave. He describes how unified the protesters have been.
When Labrosse first arrived in Ottawa he parked his trailer at Confederation Park. Then Ottawa Police moved them to 1500 Bronson. A few days ago he moved to Coventry Rd. Here’s how he says police treated him
At least six active Canadian soldiers are under investigation for supporting anti-vaccine mandates. Some participated in Convoy protests. cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…
The same day Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a state of emergency, some veterans held a news conference and posted video calling for reinforcements- other vets to “stand to”
We now know that at least 50 former soldiers and 6 active ones are against mandates.
2 are JTF2- elite special forces.
We know the Convoy leadership team has military intelligence expert and former RCMP offcr who provided security for Prime Minister
My latest: How organizers with police and military expertise are helping convoy protestors dig in. cbc.ca/news/canada/co…
Within the leadership group, there are two individuals that stand out that would have deep knowledge Ottawa's security strengths and weaknesses. One was on the Prime Minister's security detail, the other sat on Canada's national counter-terrorism unit.
There are also former police officers and soldiers who joined the convoy demonstration. The website Police on Guard lists at least 150 ex-police and 50 ex-Cdn forces who are against vaccine mandates. Video on the site shows members at the protest. policeonguard.ca/police-on-guar…
Police shut down the Conferderation Park Protest Camp, that was 500 m from Parliament. This new camp is by former Communications Security Establishment HQ. This pushes the perimeter out of the core- but is closer to main road to Ottawa Int Airport.
It would appear this new protest camp that’s being built was permitted by Ottawa Police. Councillors aren’t happy.
Why would police permit this? 1500 Bronson- is close to the primary access road to the Ottawa Intl Airport. It is within walking distance of Carleton University. In- person classes resume Monday. It’s also near Brewer Park.
