FF VII Remake: Intergrade and Grave of the Fireflies parallels.
Sonon and Melphie are an homage to Seita and Setsuko.
A small thread detailing the parallels between these two wonderful works of fiction. Spoilers for both 🧵 ->
(1) Firstly, we must acknowledge the parallels between Sonon and Melphie to Seita and Setsuko.
*Their Relationships are that of brother and sister, and they both have a deep bond with each other.
*For both, the older brother fails to protect the younger sister from dying.
(2)
*The tragic circumstances of the deaths of Melphie and Setsuko both revolve around war.
*Both Sonon and Seita live with incredible guilt and regret for not being able to save their little sisters.
*the hair lengths of the brothers and sisters are similar too.
(3)
Visually, when Sonon dies in Intergrade, we see him meet Melphie in what looks like the spirit realm.
Similarly, when Seita dies, he too meets his little sister Setsuko.
As you can see, the scenes have visual parallels with the fireflies or floating light around the pairs.
(4) Finally, there's also the link between the Dachao beans and the Fruit drop hard candies.
Both sets of brother and sister enjoy these treats, and the Dachao beans are often shown comedically to be hard to crunch, while the Hard candies are also known as Jawbreakers.
(5) Both tales are incredibly tragic and sad as well, cementing their impact on people, and their legacy.
