The people of Iran NEED our help. If you didn't know what’s happening, here’s what’s going on in Iran:
(RT to spread awareness)
🧵//THREAD
Let’s start with some backstory:
In 1975, the Dictator of Iran, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, announced that Iran was abolishing the multi-party political system.
The Iranian people had longed for a free and democratic Iran - so this decision was met with outrage.
Shah was a brutal dictator.
It’s estimated that anywhere from 25,000 to 100,000 political prisoners were tortured or killed throughout his reign.
Fast forward to 1979.
Tensions are at an all time high. The country had been in unrest for years: protests, demonstrations, attempted coups were all common.
It was very clear what the Iranian people wanted: freedom & democracy.
After years of increased tension and pressure from the Iranian people and world powers (USA), Shah’s regime began to crumble.
Finally, in February of 1979, Shah was overthrown and forced to flee Iran.
This was a massive win for the people of Iran.
There was only one problem:
Because the regime had murdered and imprisoned most of their opposing leadership, it was going to take some time for the these groups to organize their new democratic government.
This gave an opportunity to a new evil regime: the Mullahs.
Leader of the Mullahs, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, saw the opportunity as the protests grew and stole the leadership of a GENUINE revolution.
Between 1979 and 1981, Khomeini took power and suppressed any voices of dissent.
Simply, the Mullahs stole the revolution from the Iranian people.
So close to a free and democratic country, just for it to be snatched away by this brutal dictatorship.
You could imagine the pain & frustration the people of Iran felt.
Since 1981, the Mullahs have treated Iranians with harsh and unfair rule.
In 1988, the Mullah committed mass political genocide - one of darkest times in world history.
They formed the “Death Commission” - they imprisoned & executed anybody who opposed them.
In just a few weeks, they carried out the mass murder of 30,000+ Iranian political prisoners - including women & children.
Most Iranians don’t know where their loved ones are buried today
To this day, no justice has been served for the people of Iran.
Many members of the death commission still hold positions within the regime.
They continue to terrorize & deprive the Iranian people of basic necessities.
This is what tap water looks like in Mahabad, Iran.
That’s why we’re here: to fight for justice, to fight for human rights, and to give the Iranian people the voice they’ve so long deserved.
@OrgIAC Recommendation-2
The administration should seize the moral high ground and immediately address high-profile human rights cases.
