Today, I'm excited to announce we’re opening up applications for Angel Squad 6. We’ve deployed ~$12m of capital into ~30 companies, and we are just getting started.

A quick thread on a few thoughts about the Angel Squad community and angel investing.

Read on >>
1) First, what is Angel Squad? Learn more and join us at: hustlefund.vc/angelsquad
2) In Angel Squad, we’ve been lucky to connect:

400+ members across
19 countries with
30 portfolio companies across
15+ sectors through
80+ events

(Thanks @b_nicks11 for the data)
3) Squad members joined to learn, network, and invest in & support founders. They have helped so many of our founders w sales, design, hiring & product. 🙏

One person helped a startup negotiate their sales contract w/ a large co. Others gave great design advice to another co.
4) They’re generous w their expertise in the community, too! We’ve heard talks on:

- Startup regulations @srivats
- Secondary markets @drdresay
- Venture studios @barryoreilly
- The future of HW startups @itsvijen
- Poker + angel investing @derek_wolters

I've learned so much!
5) Our Angel Squad community is 37% women. When you think about how funding happens, it starts w/ the connection between an investor & a founder.

People tend to connect w/ people like them or connect with problems a founder is solving.
6) By increasing the number of angel investors as well as broadening the diversity of that investor base, we can fund more great entrepreneurs.

I've talked about this before here:
7) A decade ago, I started writing $1k checks. I was lucky to have friends further along in their journey than me, and I see a similar dynamic daily in our community.

I've written about this here:
8) But starting to invest can be intimidating. Everyone else seems so experienced!

@b_nicks11 & @haleymbryant have created a safe space to ask qs in Angel Squad.

Thanks to portco @trycovalent, we’ve done 100s of matches to connect like-minded angels to support each other.
9) I think angel investing is incredibly interesting. It's an amazing way to give back to new companies that can have a big impact on the world and on people's lives financially.

+ the returns you can get are unparalleled. You can get 100x+ returns w/o having to invest a lot.
10) My only regret is that I wish I’d started sooner. But it's never too late.

If you're interested, learn, connect, invest, and support founders with us:

Today's tweet thread is about the ideal investor update.

Read on >>
1) First, who should send investor updates? And why?

I think that all startups and funds who have investors / are looking for investors at some pt should send company updates.

Even if you don't have to. The benefits >> the downsides in most cases.
2) But there are a lot of reasons why people don't send updates...because they are:

-Ashamed of the progress (or lack of) in the business
-Afraid ppl will share their updates with competitors
-Not sure of the upside of doing so

I’ve been listening to the audiobook Sapiens, by Yuval Harari. I’m not finished yet but it lives up to the hype.

Today’s tweet thread is about a few interesting tidbits about the topic of debt that I learned from the audiobook.

Read on >>
1) First, what is the book?

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind amazon.com/dp/0062316095/

It’s basically about the history of mankind through the ages.

Harari starts w the evolution of people and follows the history of ppl to agrarian societies & conquests, etc
2) Today’s thread will just focus on the segment where he discusses debt.

Money and debt are actually really complex when you think about it.

Today's tweet thread is about startup valuations at pre-seed / seed that we're seeing in the mkt.

This is a lagging indicator so the next 6 months will be interesting to reflect back upon.

Thank you @will_bricker for pulling this data together! (Follow him!)

1) Quick recap -- there's been this pandemic that you may have heard a little something about.

Here's the valuation analysis for pre-seed/seed @will_bricker did on 2020-2021 that we tweeted out last year:

2) Will did a deeper dive on a subset of our data (n=3000 startups) who got the biggest lift in 2021 here:

Today’s thread is about investor strike zones. This is something that Warren Buffett has touted a lot and that really resonated with me.

What is an investor strike zone and why should you as an entrepreneur or as an investor care?

Read on >>
1) First what is an investor strike zone?

It’s essentially the scope of companies you’ll invest in.

-sector
-approx check size
-valuation range
-capital intensiveness
-business model
Etc
2) Warren Buffett is probably one of the most disciplined strike zone investors. He has changed his criteria a bit over the years but he is focused on looking for opportunities that fit and not spending time trying to swat at things outside the zone.

After thinking about this for a few days, I’ll wade into this one - as a mom and entrepreneur, I think this is a great idea and this would be life changing for so many people.

1) The #1 argument I’ve heard against this is that it hasn’t been done so it wouldn’t be safe now. But so many things we attempt also haven’t been done.

Fun fact - do you know how the baby incubator came about in the first place?
2) if you’re not familiar with the history of the baby incubator (and I mean - let’s be real who would be?), I highly recommend watching this episode:

Today's thread is a quick recap of the audiobook I listened to this week called Billion Dollar Whale.

This one was astonishing to listen to. It's not really a business book or a how-to book. It's much more akin to Bad Blood, the story about Theranos.

1) What is the book?

Billion Dollar Whale: The Man Who Fooled Wall Street, Hollywood, and the World

2) The tl;dr is that this is a story about a guy named Jho Low who is sought for by a variety of government authorities in relation to the 1MDB scandal. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jho_Low)
