How to Optimise Practice Transfer at the Golf Range (without getting luck)
Golf Ranges are often lacking the information we use on the golf course that shape our intent for the shot and subsequent behaviors, movements & ball flights. Therefore we have to get a little creative to optimise transfer to the golf course with existing or new golf shots.
Intention (what I am trying to do) shapes movement, which (should) shape behaviors (i.e. practice swings with intent of shot, Imagery before shot and post shot reflection).
Imagery via scenarios shape intention, which (should) shape behaviors.
Imagining real life scenarios (via the use of Imagery), such as I am hitting to the range target 150 yards away, however it’s a front right flag, therefore I’m going to hit a high fade slightly long and left of the target, therefore influencing your intent.
Imagery (via scenarios) creates intention which in turn shapes behaviors (before, during & after) and then subsequent movement for the specfic ball flight.
Behaviors and Movements that we would like to foster on the golf course….potentially making it transfer more?
In Lesson 5 in swingliketiger.com we argue Imagery and subsequent scenarios created through Imagery could be deemed as a potential training aids to shape your current and potential new movements strategies for specific ball flights.
Additionally using this framework (Imagery-Intent-Behaviors-Movement-Ball Flight) at the range you could potentially influence new movements and ball flights.
For example you are slicing the ball, you Imagine hooking the ball to a target (intent) round another intermediate target that you are pretending to be a tree (Imagery), helping change behaviours and movement and give you feedback to reflect on the ball flight after execution.
Then you can adjust as necessary via specfic feedback (i.e. ball flight still slicing, try and hook the ball even more or/and create a more extreme scenario).
Realise that optimising practice transfer to the golf course from the golf range is potentially realised or constrained by your creativity and imagination.
How to Calibrate Your Golf Swing (without getting lucky)
Understand that all you have on the golf course is ballflight, strike and ‘feel’ for feedback.
‘Feel’ could be numerous things. Body in time and space awareness, before, during and after swing. Club awareness before, during and after swing. Rhythm and timing…
Why I don’t ask players to miss greens in Performance Games Anymore.
I used to play group and individual performance games with ‘Elite’ golfers where it would be score based and part of the game you would have to deliberately miss the green.
The rationale is it taught players how to ‘grind’ out a score. It created ‘desirable difficulties’
Understand that you are a guessing machine that solves problems. The best golfers are the best guessers, they solve more problems with their best guesses.
You getting better at golf is about guessing better, becoming a better problem solver.
